If the Rangers continue to struggle, Will Borgen could possibility be traded before the NHL Trade Deadline in March.
The New York Rangers may have just acquired defenseman Will Borgen from the Seattle Kraken, but his tenure in The Big Apple may not last long.
Borgen is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2024-25 season, which makes him a valuable asset at the NHL Trade Deadline.
Pierre LeBrun of TSN believes that if the Rangers continue on their downward spiral, the team will be more likely to trade Borgen.
“The Rangers just acquired Borgen, but he’s a pending unrestricted free agent and unless New York can somehow stop the bleeding and turn around its season, the Blueshirts will be sellers and open to flipping him,” Lebrun wrote.
Meanwhile TSN’s Chris Johnston is under the impression Borgen will garner a lot of interest during the deadline on March 7.
“The stay-at-home defender is a good skater who should be able to step into a second pairing on a team and brings the kind of size teams view as an added plus come playoff time,” Johnston wrote. “Borgen will have plenty of suitors ahead of the deadline…”
The Rangers acquired Borgen, a 2025 third-round pick and a 2025 sixth-round pick in exchange for Kaapo Kakko.
The 28-year-old’s availability will all depend on how the Rangers play.
If New York makes a playoff push, Borgen could serve as a valuable top-four defenseman, but if their season continues to spiral out of control, he’ll more than likely be shipped off to the highest bidder.
