Dean Chynoweth has found a new place to coach.

The former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach will have the same title with the Winnipeg Jets under new head coach Scott Arniel, the club announced on Monday.

On Sunday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that this was likely coming on his '32 Thoughts' podcast with Jeff Marek.

"The word is that he could end up as an assistant coach on Scott Arniel's staff," Friedman said on Sunday's edition of the '32 Thoughts' podcast. "I think there were a couple of teams looking at him."

Chynoweth joined the Maple Leafs as an assistant coach in July of 2021 after departing from a similar role with the Carolina Hurricanes. He led the club defense and penalty-killing duties until last summer when Mike Van Ryn was brought in and

Chynoweth was limited to just penalty-killing duties in 2023-24.

With Craig Berube coming in as the new head coach of the Leafs, the club has gone through a bit of an overhaul with the staff. They added Lane Lambert as an associate coach while announcing that Chynoweth would not return.

The Leafs ranked 23rd on the penalty kill last season under Chynoweth. He's one of several Leafs departures on the coaching staff. Assistant Manny Malhotra departed the club to become the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks' AHL affiliate in Abbotsford.

The Leafs announced on Saturday that the club parted ways with Guy Boucher after just one season.

Toronto's coaching staff under Berube now looks a little bare with just Lambert (associate) and Van Ryn, suggesting another body or two could be added between now and the beginning of the 2024-25 season. The Leafs had previously been linked to Marc Savard but there hasn't been any movement on that as of this writing.
