Wide receiver and special teams returner Steven Sims is among members of the Houston Texans expecting big things from the club's offense after quarterback C.J. Stroud officially won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award this past February.
"We’ve got a great group," Sims said at his youth football camp over the weekend, as shared by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. "I can’t wait to get back to camp. It’s going to be so much fun. I feel like there’s going to be a lot of big plays, a lot of fun, but it’s a business and it’s work. It’s time to get back to work and I’m excited to go back to work with the group we’ve got. I feel like from top to bottom everybody can get it done."
Per Pro Football Reference stats, Stroud finished the 2023 regular season leading the NFL among qualified players with an average of 273.9 passing yards per game. According to ESPN, the Texans ended Week 18 with the league's seventh-best passing offense (245.5 yards through the air per contest).
Stroud and his teammates claimed the AFC South division title and notched a home playoff win over the Cleveland Browns before Houston acquired star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills this offseason. Having Diggs as a weapon is one reason some within the Texans locker room believe Stroud will be part of Most Valuable Player Award conversations through this coming January.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans recently spoke about starting "back from ground zero" and ensuring his players get "back to our day one fundamentals" once training camp opens later this month.
Sims mentioned how the 2023 Texans "didn’t reach our goals" due to their 34-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round of the postseason tournament.
"That’s the bottom line," Sims continued. "We want to reach our goals and I want to do everything I can to help the team get to our goal, which is the Super Bowl."
As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Houston fifth among the betting favorites at +850 odds to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LIX.
