On the July 29 episode of The Young and the Restless, Lily called Nate to tell him that Damian was dead. Nate wanted to know how… and he wanted to know why. We want to know why, too. And not just about Damian. We want to know why about Cole and Chance, too.
Damian’s Buildup
Damian (Jermaine Rivers) was brought on with such a massive buildup. For weeks, all we heard was “Damian, Damian, Damian.” (That was before we started hearing “Dumas, Dumas, Dumas.”) We even got a fake Damian fake-out with Holden (Nathan Owens).
And then we finally met him. And then he finally reunited with his mother, Amy (Valarie Pettiford). And then he met his new brother, Nate (Sean Dominic). And then he started a fledgling romance with Lily (Christel Khalil).
We realize that things happen randomly in real life, but they do not happen randomly in fiction. If this was the plan all along, we have to ask why this character was ever introduced in the first place.
Cole’s Untimely Demise
Cole (J. Eddie Peck) had been living in Europe for years. Nobody really missed him. It made sense that he would return for Claire’s (Hayley Erin) storyline. But if the writers didn’t want to feature him, why not simply ship him back to England? Nobody would have missed him. Again.
Why kill Cole off—primarily off-screen, at that? It didn’t move the story along? It didn’t create any valuable drama. If this regime didn’t know what to do with him, why not keep him in the wings in case another set of writers did? He was doing no harm off-screen.

Chance—The Last Of The Chancellors
Unlike Damian or Cole, Chance (Conner Floyd) was born on air. He was the son of Nina (Tricia Cast), the grandson of Jill (Jess Walton), and the beloved (it’s complicated) of the late Kay (Jeanne Cooper).
Chance had strong ties to the canvas. And he’d already been pushed off-screen, thanks to Abby (Melissa Ordway) cheating on him with Devon (Bryton James), and then marrying their son’s biological father.

Chance was also brought on with a lot of fanfare. And he’d been ignored recently. Why couldn’t he have stayed ignored (see: Cole, above) until someone thought of what to do with him?
All three of these men had potential. And now all three are gone. For no reason. Why?
