Yаnkees’ Jose Trevіno returns from іnjured lіst to new bасkuр role

The Yankees will have a fresh catcher and bullpen arm when their series begins Friday in Detroit.

During Thursday’s off day, the Yankees returned catcher Jose Trevino from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list.

Carlos Narvaez was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Jose Trevino

The Yankees activated Jose Trevino off the injured list on Thursday,

Trevino missed more than a month with a left quad strain, an injury he suffered when he and Austin Wells were in a timeshare behind the plate.

Trevino will return essentially as a backup, as manager Aaron Boone said last week that Wells, who has emerged as the club’s cleanup hitter, “will probably garner a lot of playing time.”

Before going down July 12, Trevino posted a .713 OPS and carries a reputation as a sterling defensive catcher.

Wells owns a .773 OPS and continues to look comfortable against major league pitching.

One of the two will have a new pitcher to catch after Will Warren was optioned after his spot start Wednesday, which leaves an opening in an underwhelming bullpen.

The Yankees have a group of rehabbing pitchers in the minors, with Scott Effross and Nick Burdi the two closest to being summoned.

Jose Trevino

Jose Trevino is expected to now be a backup for the Yankees.

Effross, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and then required back surgery last December, has been building up in the minors and attempting to prove himself worthy of a call-up since June 19.

The righty’s results have improved lately, having allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in his past eight innings with SWB.

“I think he’s definitely been throwing the ball better, so that’s been encouraging,” Boone said Monday. “Feel like we’re getting some more guys in the mix to have good options. So yeah, Scotty’s put together some good outings here in a row so he’s definitely in the mix and in consideration.”

Austin Wells

Austin Wells has looked comfortable against MLB pitching in
increased playing time.

Burdi, who has been out since May 23 with right hip inflammation, also is in the mix. The strong righty had allowed two runs in 5 ²/₃ innings with seven strikeouts with SWB.

Lou Trivino (Tommy John surgery) and Ian Hamilton (right lat strain) are a bit further behind.

In Detroit, the Yankees reportedly will get an up-close look at one of their former top prospects.

Trey Sweeney, a first-round pick by the Yankees in 2021, will join the Tigers for his debut, according to ESPN.

Trey Sweeney

The Yankees picked Trey Sweeney in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

Sweeney was dealt last offseason to the Dodgers for Victor Gonzalez and Jorbit Vivas.

Los Angeles flipped the shortstop to the Tigers at the trade deadline in the swap that sent Jack Flaherty to the Dodgers.

MLB released its 2025 spring training schedule, which includes 33 Yankees games (16 at home and 17 on the road).

The Yankees’ Grapefruit League season begins Feb. 21 against the Rays and ends March 24 in Port St. Lucie against the Mets.
