Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman spoke candidly about the team's chances in free agency.
Detroit General Manager Steve Yzerman spoke openly about the team’s chances of landing impactful free agents when the market opens this Tuesday. Yzerman noted that Detroit is simply in the same market as a lot of other teams like they were trying to get a goaltender before trading for Anaheim's John Gibson and may make things difficult for the team to get any big names.
"The free agency market at a lot of positions is pretty thin, but there are players that we would have some interest in," Yzerman said to ESPN "I'm not that optimistic, to be honest with you, because there's more teams than there are players for what we're looking for, and we'll continue to see if we can do something through trade and once the draft shakes, settles down, and once the initial July one free agency subsides with the rush there and we'll see what teams are looking to do after that."
The Red Wings are looking to add players at high traffic parts of their lineup like top end defencemen as well as a top-six forward which are two areas that many teams are looking to improve. Yzerman's comments may temper Red Wings fans excitement as to who they franchise is looking to add as they were rumored to be linked with names like Florida's Aaron Ekblad, Vancouver's Brock Boeser and LA's Vladislav Gavrikov.
