The 2009 New Orleans Saints were one of the most electrifying teams of the 21st century and wasn't just an ordinary Super Bowl run. Bleacher Report's Brad Gagon believes that this squad was special and is worthy of being placed as a top 5 Super Bowl winner of the century.
The Saints 2009 season was one for the ages. They set a franchise record of 13 wins, locked up the number 1 seed, and secured the NFC South title. During their playoff run, they defeated the Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, and Indianapolis Colts on their way to lifting up the Lombardi trophy.
This path put them through a quarterback gauntlet where they had to defeat teams led by Kurt Warner, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. Luckily, New Orleans had Drew Brees on their side.
The New Orleans Saints 2009 Super Bowl victory was not only major for the organization, but major for the city of New Orleans. This was their first Super Bowl title, which brought a morale boost, gave a sense of pride, and unity to a city that suffered from horrific hurricane effects.
The Saints dominated the entire season, jumping out to a 13-0 start and winning 9 out of their 16 games by double digit margins. They also finished with an impressive 5-1 record against opponents with a winning record. The 2009 Saints squad was full of talent on both sides of the ball, they carried 7 Pro Bowlers and 2 First Team All Pros.
The NFL has witnessed some amazing offenses in the 21st century such as the 2007 Patriots, 2011 Green Bay Packers, 2013 Denver Broncos, and the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs. Even though these teams lit up the scoreboard, they never completed the mission of hoisting the Lombardi trophy at the end of the season. The Saints did both in 2009.
Gagon explained how the Saints offense was miles ahead of the other Super Bowl champions this century.
"The Drew Brees-led Saints offense averaged 31.9 points per game, making it easily the highest-scoring offense among 21st-century Super Bowl winners."
Brees, Marques Colston, Reggie Bush, and Pierre Thomas played a key role in their championship run. This offense saw seven players finish with more than 500 yards from scrimmage. The 2009 Saints are currently the best Super Bowl winning offense in the 21st century.
The Saints defense was also a crucial part of their Super Bowl run. Although they weren't a top unit in points allowed and yards per game, they found ways to force turnovers, as they finished the 2009 campaign with an insane 39 takeaways and added 8 more in the postseason.
Gagon has this ranking spot on! The 2009 Saints certainly deserve a spot as top 5 Super Bowl winning squad of the 21st century. The combination of exceptional on field talent, coaching, and team chemistry make this team so unique from most of the other Super Bowl winners of the century.
This Saints squad was truly one of the best we've seen this century. Whenever you discuss the best Super Bowl winners over the last 25 years, the 2009 New Orleans Saints will always be one of the first brought up in the conversation.
