After That Heroic Moment, Eddie's 9-1-1 Replacement Deserves To Stay With The 118

9-1-1 season 8, episode 14 was filled with high-octane thrills, but one scene cemented the future of Eddie’s replacement at the 118. Ryan Guzman’s character has been at the center of the 9-1-1 season 8 story, particularly focused on his cross-country move to reconcile with his son, Christopher (Gavin McHugh). While his departure has impacted the entire LAFD station 118— most severely in the case of Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark)— the hole Eddie left proved it isn’t impossible to temporarily fill. Starting in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 11, Ravi Panikkar (Anirudh Pisharody) officially took over as Buck’s field partner.

Although Ravi has experienced some of 9-1-1’s most intense disasters alongside Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) and the dynamic paramedic duo of Henrietta “Hen” Wilson (Aisha Hinds) and Howard “Chimney” Han (Kenneth Choi), the probationary firefighter (or “probie”) faded into the background until the latter half of 9-1-1 season 8. While Eddie leaving was heartbreaking, the silver lining was the opportunity it gave Ravi to become a more prevalent character, and he’s already started to shine. Yet, despite the two-part thriller known as 9-1-1's "Contagion" event giving Ravi an abundance of screen-time, his newfound position may only be temporary.

Ravi Took Over Eddie's Spot When He Left In 9-1-1 Season 8

After The Big Texas Move, The Probie Stepped Up

If Eddie hadn’t let his parents take Christopher to Texas in the 9-1-1 season 7 finale, Ravi might never have been promoted to the LAFD’s A Team. The first batch of episodes in 9-1-1 season 8 explored the pain of Eddie living without his child in excruciating detail, culminating in a sudden revelation in the midseason finale: in Eddie’s mind, the only real chance he had of reconnecting with Christopher entailed relocating to Texas, too. Season 8’s Texas episodes have shown that Eddie’s parents are 9-1-1’s new villains, but they've also established that Eddie and Christopher’s relationship is finally mending.

When Eddie revealed his moving plans to Buck in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 8, most wondered who, if anyone, could replace him. For longtime viewers of the first-responder procedural, the answer was obvious. Ever since his introduction in 9-1-1 season 4, episode 6, Ravi has been a fan-favorite yet shockingly underutilized character9-1-1 offered glimpses into Ravi's narrative potential, including him briefly opening up about his childhood cancer and hilariously cursing the 118 by saying “the Q word” (quiet) in one of 9-1-1’s best episodes (“Jinx”). After 9-1-1 season 5, however, Ravi seemed to vanish from the fire station.

9-1-1 finally brought Ravi into the core group, only for him to feel fundamentally out-of-place.

With the 118 down a member following Eddie’s departure, Ravi stepped up— but it was hardly a seamless transition. Throughout 9-1-1 season 8, episode 11, Bobby repeatedly calls Ravi “Eddie” while doling out assignments, and when Buck tries to “bond” with his new partner by taking him out for drinks, he can’t refrain from talking about Eddie the entire time. After years of being sidelined, 9-1-1 finally brought Ravi into the core group, only for him to feel fundamentally out-of-place. However, despite his initial reservations, Ravi is now proving he has what it takes to be more than a substitute.

Ravi's 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 14's Heroic Move Proves That He Deserves To Be A Member Of The 118

He Deserves A Spot On The Team, Not On The Bench

Ravi in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 14, Sick Day, at a distance

“Sick Day” started off on a rough note for Ravi, but 9-1-1 season 8, episode 14 gave him a chance to redeem himself once the LAFD becomes trapped in a dangerous research lab. The episode begins with a fiery collision between a bus and a car, and Bobby barely rescues a baby that was hidden in the backseat of a car that Ravi thought he’d cleared. In a much more effective bonding moment, Ravi opens up to Buck about feeling undeserving of his place on the team and admits he’s planning to quit, an idea that Buck vehemently shuts down.

New episodes of 9-1-1 can be streamed on Hulu the day after they air on ABC.

After Chimney is infected by the CCHG (Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever) in the emergency quarantined lab, Ravi volunteers himself to locate the antiviral against the direct orders of the US military. Bridget Regan’s 9-1-1 character, evil scientist Moira Blake, is revealed to have stolen the only remaining antidote viral, but Ravi was prepared to face domestic terrorism charges to save Chimney’s life. “Sick Day” may have revealed Ravi’s insecurity about his spot on the A Team, but his actions speak for themselves— Ravi is a great fit for the 118, and he deserves to stay there.

Now that he’s bonded with the 118 via another collective near-death experience in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 14, Ravi can’t be easily discarded, even if Eddie were to return to LA immediately after they escape the lab. Eddie may be an integral character in 9-1-1, but Ravi has something invaluable for the series: untapped potential. With 9-1-1 season 9 on the horizon, Ravi could be the breath of fresh air the procedural needs to avoid going stale. Ideally, 9-1-1 would let Ravi and Eddie both remain in the core group, but the former especially deserves more time in the sun.
