Not their best year.
The Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive line was still an issue in 2024, enough that offensive line Coach Frank Pollack was fired. Pollack was given veteran free agents, premium draft picks, and plenty of time, but he couldn’t get things where they needed to be.
One of those free agents was guard Alex Cappa, who signed with the Bengals after the 2021 season. After winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cappa came to Cincinnati to be a veteran presence on the offensive line.
Cappa was solid in 2022 before an ankle injury shortened his season, and he played well enough in 2023.
The 2024 season, however, was not a good one. Cappa won a Triple Crown you never want to win. Cappa was last or tied for last in sacks allowed, pressures allowed, and hurries allowed.
Certainly the opposite of Ja’Marr Chase’s triple crown.
The Bengals could move on from Cappa this offseason, and as the graphic shows, Cordell Volson wasn’t much better. He was actually benched in favor of journeyman Cody Ford, so it’s unlikely we’ll see Volson starting for the Bengals in 2025, barring injury.
We have often heard that the Bengals don’t value the guard position, but maybe it's time they should.
