Dom Smith is batting third in the Red Sox lineup Wednesday for the first time this season. Enmanuel Valdez, who Boston recalled Wednesday to take injured Tyler O’Neill’s spot on the roster, will bat fifth.
Valdez, who is 14-for-91 (.154) in two stints with Boston this year, batted fifth in two games earlier this season. Smith is 16-for-81 (.198) this season.
The Red Sox and Tigers will play the third game of their four-game series at 4:10 p.m. here at Fenway Park. Boston won 7-3 on Friday after losing 5-0 on Thursday.

Smith and Valdez are among the fifth left-handed batters who manager Alex Cora has in the lineup against righty Reese Olson (1.92 ERA, 10 starts).
Righty Cooper Criswell (4.19 ERA, nine outings, eight starts) will start for Boston.
