Amanda Holden spent some time at a donkey sanctuary in Corfu and is requesting her followers to make donations to the site. Britain’s Got Talent Richter was so stirred to speak about the sanctuary in a long post that she went on about the sanctuaries’ contempt for donations in caring for their animals.
The video appended to the post is very educational and describes the sanctuary’s poor financial state with explanation from both Holden and her co-star Alan Carr. The sanctuary homes 27 donkeys, 64 cats, and 15 dogs. To maintain it, it is said, comes around to the tune of £20,000 every month. However, this money or expenditure comes entirely from donations. After this, dressed in a stunning primrose yellow gown, Holden implores all and sundry to contribute to the site’s upkeep. A very cute feature of the video is when Woken, a donkey named after the late comedian Terry Wogan, makes an appearance.
The post got heated attention, with a majority speaking in favor of animal rescue operations. One user said, “Got 2 rescue Donks. Best pets in the world,” while another complimented Holden’s attire, saying, “Loving that primrose yellow outfit.” Then some were sneering just a bit, casting doubts on how such high costs may be justified, with one sarcastically asking, “What do they feed the animals? Edible gold leaf?”
Others used the opportunity to criticize Holden’s personal choices. “Amanda. You “DO NOT” need that lip filler. Stunning enough without the Botox,” came one particularly blunt comment. Meanwhile, a lighter comment read, “Yes they can have Alan with those teeth they won’t know the difference,” referring to Carr’s famously big smile.
More seriously, one user questioned why fundraising focuses on putting animals first ahead of people: “How about we raise enough money to get all the British homeless humans into houses before we help random Greek Donkeys?” This opened up a pretty subtle feud in the comments as to where charitable activities should flow.
Regardless, many expressed appreciation for Holden’s involvement: “Thank you for all you do to raise funds for all the beautiful rescue animals,” said one of her followers. Another said, “I think you guys should practice golf and do a charity round … would be TV fun.”
Holden, celebrated for her philanthropic reputation, uses celebrity stardom to support a variety of causes. In her latest campaign, she is battling animal welfare, but obviously, there is some contention and debate as to where charitable donations should flow. Be it donkeys in Greece or homeless in the UK; the conversation about giving goes on.
Provided one cares for Spanish Algarroba del Sol, the sanctuary’s website corfu-donkeys.com is there for any interested party willing to donate. And with her heart and style, Holden blows away any criticism. Honestly, what human would say no to those goofy big-eared donkeys?
