In reigning “American Idol” champ Jamal Roberts’ new single “Mississippi,” released on July 25, 2025, he sings about everything he misses in his home state when he’s out on the road, living his dream.
What the 27-year-old soul singer misses most of all when he’s away are his three daughters — Harmoni, 7, Lyrik, 4, and Gianna, 3 months. Fans love what a doting dad Roberts is, but many have been surprised to learn he’s “very single,” as he told multiple radio stations shortly after his big win in May.
Roberts is frequently asked on social media why he isn’t married or if he’s planning to get married. During a Facebook Live on July 13, Roberts read aloud one fan’s comment — “You need to get married to one of your kids’ moms” — and opened up about why he hasn’t yet.
Jamal Roberts Advises Fans Not to Marry ‘Seasonal People’
After thinking for a moment about the comment a fan left about him not being married, Roberts turned to the camera and said, “Y’all, let me tell y’all something about this marriage thing. This is why so many marriages fail, because y’all are running and getting married to seasonal people.”
Roberts widened his eyes, suspecting his followers might be surprised by that theory, and then smiled brightly as he said, “Uh-oh. Y’all ain’t ready for that conversation. Y’all are getting married to people that look good on the outside and you don’t even know … how they act through all the seasons of their life.”
“Sometimes God will put seasonal people in your life, for a season, and you’re so infatuated with how they look and how they smell and how they talk that you want to get married,” Roberts continued, “and you wonder why the marriage (didn’t last).”
“Well, let me tell you something,” Roberts said. “When God puts something together — I didn’t say when you decide that you want to get married. I said when God truly puts something together, and I’ve seen him do it, no man can tear it apart. So don’t be so quick when you see somebody cute and you think that’s who you want, and you love how they do this and that, they mesmerize you. Don’t jump the gun. Now you’re married, now you’re unhappy.”
“So the question is, when am I getting married? When the time is right,” Roberts said, and then looked at the comments coming in for him. “So why have children with them? Well, because I was young and I was shackin’ up. Next question.”
Roberts then noticed a comment he liked from someone, noting, “‘That’s your business, your journey.’ Amen! That’s my journey.”
What is Jamal Roberts Looking For in His Ideal Wife?
During a June 2 appearance on “The Love You Moore Show,” Roberts said that his perfect life partner will be someone who “understands” his unique situation.
“I’m looking for a woman who understands, that’s not quick to this-and-that, not quick to judge,” Roberts told host Willie Moore, Jr. “Understand the relationship I have with my kids, and understand that my kids are my life and they are my world. And I’m gonna do anything I can for my kids.”
“But also, (I want someone) to be there, to be a rock, you know?” Roberts continued. “Not saying, ‘Be a housewife,’ I’m not saying that. I’m just saying be those things that I need.”
“In this journey, a lot of obstacles are gonna come,” Roberts said of the music industry, “and one thing I don’t need is the person that I’m trusting and the person that’s on my side looking at me strange because of some outdoor stuff, you know what I’m saying? Keep it at home.”
“We supposed to be like this,” he said, crossing his fingers. “We supposed to be locked and loaded, you know what I’m saying? Don’t let none of that outside stuff (in).”
