The divorce was anticipated almost from the moment Ashley and Michael were introduced as principal cast members of The Real Housewives of Potomac. Differences between the couple began with the twenty-nine-year age gap and included their outlook and perspectives on friends and family. Ashley was very close to her mother and extended family. She also enjoyed an active social life with her co-stars on RHOP. Michael quickly tired of bearing the financial burden of Ashley's family and didn't gel with the rest of the cast.

Infidelity became an issue early on, with blogs leaking photos of Michael in compromising positions with several women. Ashley spent more time defending her husband and her choice not to divorce him than anything else. Michael's philandering ways didn't stop the couple from realizing Ashley's dream of being a mother. She gave birth to sons Dean and Dylan, but Michael's wandering eyes continued. Ashley admitted to her Potomac girlfriends that during their newlywed years, she enjoyed having threesomes with Michael, but after the children were born she no longer wanted to entertain the alternative lifestyle with her husband.

In 2018, a male camera operator accused Michael of grabbing and groping him on set during Monique Samuels baby shower. The incident became a major part of Ashley's RHOP story line, but ultimately the charges were dropped. Michael was later accused of having a crush on Robyn Dixon's husband, Juan Dixon. Blogs also reported that Michael had an account on grindr, a social networking and dating app that assists LGBTQ+ people to find other users nearby.

Over the past three seasons, Ashley has attempted to avoid answering questions about her impending divorce. During promotion for season 9 she shared with Collider that although she was legally separated from Michael and not dating publicly, she considered herself single and had been enjoying the company of male admirers. She did speak briefly about dating sports director Josh Gudenburr and actor Luke Gulbranson. During the final episodes of season 9, she performed a theatrical androgynous piece at a local burlesque drag show and thanked the cast for embracing her as she expressed her sexual identity.

Ashley and Michael's co-parenting relationship has continued to improve over the past two seasons. Michael was quoted saying the agreement was "amicable and fair". Ashley has been in a positive place all season and says that she's been having fun. With her divorce papers finally behind her, RHOP audiences can look forward to seeing her exploring more of her single life on camera. If her drag performance was any indication, it appears Ashley is prepared to take fans on one hell of a ride. RHOP Season 9 “Reunion: Part 1” airs on February 16, 2025, and Part 2 on February 23, 2024, on Bravo. The show is available to stream on Peacock.
