By waiving Barclay Goodrow, the Rangers saved a good chunk of cap space and may be preparing to make a big move this offseason.
It seems the New York Rangers are gearing up to make a big move this offseason.
The Rangers waived Barclay Goodrow earlier this week and got rid of the remaining three years of his contract, saving $3,641,667 per year.
Goodrow was a pretty important piece for this Rangers team, serving as an assistant captain while playing a two-way role that impacted New York at both ends of the ice, so cutting ties with him must have been a difficult decision for Chris Drury.
However, the Rangers are competing for a Stanley Cup and need to have some cap flexibility in order to make improvements to the roster.
By waiving Goodrow, the Rangers have $12.8 million in available cap space.
Some of the top free agents this summer include Steven Stamkos, Sam Reinhart, Jake Guentzel, Elias Lindholm, Jonathan Marchessault and Tyler Toffoli just to name a few.
It’s unclear who the Rangers may or may not have interest in, but with more cap flexibility they could be an intriguing destination for some of these top names.
Drury said that nothing is off the table this offseason and he is taking his words to heart making the Goodrow to kick off what could be a busy summer.
It was clear that despite being one of the top teams in the NHL and winning the Presidents’ Trophy, the Rangers are still a piece or two away from really reaching their highest peak.
Now, Drury is putting all of the chess pieces together in order to propell New York over the top as the NHL’s best.
