When the same actors turn up in our favorite shows, the idea of crossover events come up. For that to happen, shows need to be set in the same universe, and now eyes are on The Rookie and 9-1-1 to see if a crossover event is possible. It’s interesting that the same actress has been hired to play villains in both shows at the same time.
Bridget Regan has joined both The Rookie season 7 and 9-1-1 season 8, and she plays a villain in both of these shows. It could be possible that she is the same character at heart, so that we could see the two teams join forces to save the day. The only way for something like this to work, though, is for the two shows to be set within the same universe, and while that is something we would love to see, it could be tricky to handle.
The Rookie & 9-1-1 Being In The Same Universe Theory Explained
How It’s Plausible For The Shows To Crossover
The initial idea of both The Rookie and 9-1-1 being set in the same universe really happened after 9-1-1 moved from FOX to ABC. With both shows now on the same network, it made it much easier to bring a storyline that would affect them both. 9-1-1 even cemented that idea after it crossed over with Doctor Odyssey, albeit that was a little easier as both are also Ryan Murphy shows as well as ABC shows. On top of both The Rookie and 9-1-1 airing on the same network, there is also the fact that both are set in Los Angeles, making a crossover event seem plausible. Nobody has to go to a different state to make the show work, such as when 9-1-1 crossed over with 9-1-1: Lone Star. It would make it easy for a character or two to show up, without the need for a major event to take place.
He decided that it would be too “hard” to do, as it would mean there would be an expectation to see the characters show up in each other’s universes after the crossover.
TVLine looked into this and reported that some of The Rookie cast has even heard people calling for a crossover between the two, but in the, The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley has ruled out the idea. He decided that it would be too “hard” to do, as it would mean there would be an expectation to see the characters show up in each other’s universes after the crossover. Los Angeles is big, but it’s not so big that Nolan and Athena wouldn’t end up crossing paths now and again on calls.
Bridget Regan Plays The Villain In Both 9-1-1 Season 8 & The Rookie Season 7
Who Bridget Regan Plays In The Two Shows
That being said, Regan coming into both shows at the same time as villainous characters certainly opens the door for a crossover event. In The Rookie season 7, Regan has returned after already appearing as one of The Rookie's villains, Monica Stevens. She is a lawyer who represented Elijah Stone, who turned out to create problems for Wesley and led to him being disbarred, and she is also Wesley's ex-fiancée. Now, Monica is back to create more issues for the LAPD.
Meanwhile, in 9-1-1 season 8, Regan plays a researcher who isn’t afraid to break the rules to further her research and testing. Due to this, she has sped up the incubation period for a deadly disease, and she has taken the only anti-viral for it, making it impossible to save Chimney from the fateful disease. Regan’s Moira in 9-1-1 is out in the city at the moment, and we’ll need to wait for the second part of the contagion event to find out how she’ll be caught and if it will be in time to save Chimney.
Despite The Possibility, The Rookie & 9-1-1 Don't Officially Exist In The Same Universe
A Crossover Event Is Likely Never Happening
At this point, there are no signs that the two arcs connect. In fact, Regan plays two distinctive villains, with one being a whip-smart lawyer and the other being a determined researcher. The only similarity between the two characters is that they have questionable ethics. The contagion plotline has not come up in The Rookie season 7. At least when it came to 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star, there was a mention of Chimney’s near-death experience from 9-1-1 season 1 in 9-1-1: Lone Star to indicate they were in the same universe.Based on Hawley’s words, The Rookie and 9-1-1 are not in the same universe officially. This doesn’t rule out the potential for the two to end up within the same world, as both shows have been renewed by ABC for 2025–2026, and they remain set in the same location. If the two production teams could make it work, the wish of those watching could come true.
