9-1-1 Season 8 features a huge development as a main character dies for the first time since the show's inception. Captain Robert "Bobby" Wade Nash (Peter Krause) died in 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 15, "Lab Rats." The development surprised many viewers, as was the case for the cast. Many received a call from showrunner Tim Minear, sharing what would happen. Oliver Stark's character is close to the captain, which leads to many shared scenes, so when Stark received the call, he was flabbergasted. "The rest of the cast [apart from Krause], we received the call about two weeks before actually shooting it, so there wasn't much say goodbye time," Stark shared in an appearance on Good Morning America ahead of the Season 8 finale. He continued, sharing his immediate reaction to the phone call, saying:
"I received the call, and honestly, I went silent when I got it. Tim Minear, who is our showrunner, he said: 'Are your still there?' and I said, 'Yeah. I just don't know what to say.' It was shocking and stunning, and it was sad, you know. We've had eight years of building a really close-knit family, and we've lost our kind of patriarchal figure."
Like Stark, cast members were stunned and tried to sway Minear. They "would not believe me," he told Entertainment Weekly. "They all tried to bargain with me. I am a benevolent God, but I just felt like it was something that needed to happen. So the last month has been super emotional for all of us, and I think for Peter in particular. I really credit him for his professionalism and his friendship. We've now known each other for quite a while. He used to live right behind me for the first several years of the show, and I can't wait to do something with him again, quite frankly," the showrunner shared.
'9-1-1' Says Goodbye For Now as Season 8 Wraps Up
The 9-1-1 Season 8 finale finds the station trapped once again. "The 118, still reeling from their recent loss, is dispatched to a mass casualty event after a high-rise apartment building collapses. Then, Athena (Angela Bassett) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) have to work together to save a familiar face," the logline for 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 18, "Seismic Shifts," reads. The finale picks up from the previous episode's events, where a gas from an underground source caused emergencies all over the city. Rescue efforts begin following the collapse of a residential building in Athena's vicinity. Athena and Chim are stuck in the rubble and are forced to work together despite their cooling relationship after Bobby's death.
