With 9-1-1 season 8 wrapping this week and it already being renewed for a ninth season, this is a great opportunity for the show to explore the depths of grief and how one moves on from losing their soulmate. Athena has been expected to move on quickly from many tragedies she has faced throughout the course of the show. After such a terrible loss, and now that Bobby has been buried in Minnesota, it is time for a huge change in her character that doesn't come from tragedy. We could see a whole new Athena Grant and it could be a great thing.
Athena Being Completely Alone In 9-1-1 Season 9 Might Be What She Needs (As Scary As It Is)
This Is How She Is Going To Grow
After the fire that destroyed their house burned down in the 9-1-1 season 7 finale, Bobby and Athena spent the entirety of season 8 building their dream home. It was the place where the two were going to grow old together. Now, the house will be brand new with only her inside. Both children have already left the nest. This will be the first time Athena has ever been alone. It is not something we as fans wish for her, but we know this is probably what is best. She needs to learn how to navigate life without Bobby by her side.
9-1-1 is a show known for fast storylines and moving on to the next big world-ending event. It's almost as if each major event is forgotten about just to make room for the next big story. However, the loss of Bobby gives the writers a chance to deeply explore the stages of grief. Athena deserves the chance to really mourn her husband, and the best way to do that is slowly. Although she is alone in the house, this process will bring her closer to the family she has built with the 118. It is all about time.
This Move Was Something She Didn't Give A Second Thought To Before
Throughout the show, Athena is known as Sergeant Grant. It is the position she has found herself most comfortable in. Now that Bobby is gone, it is time to reach outside that comfort zone and step into a new role. She has done a lot of good on the streets of Los Angeles, but maybe it is time for her to do some good in a different way. It is not too late for Athena to accept the lieutenant position with the police department. After the way Bobby died and seeing what could happen during her dangerous job, it might be time to protect herself and work more closely at the desk.
This was not something she would have even considered before Bobby's death. She had been offered the position, but she turned it down because she loved being out in the field. Becoming a lieutenant would mean more paperwork and less actual police work, and for the longest time, it was not something she wanted. This season of 9-1-1, Hen mentioned the promotion to Athena and asked if she ever regretted it. She said, "I'm starting to." This could be a possible hint toward Athena's future in her career, especially now that she may be looking for a big change in the wake of her tremendous loss and grief. Taking the time to evaluate how she's doing after Bobby's death may prompt Athena to reevaluate her entire life, and that includes her career.
