Bruins Star Is Big Target for Penguins

Jake DeBrusk could generate interest from the Penguins if he hits the market.

Jake DeBrusk is the Boston Bruins’ top unrestricted free agent heading into the summer. With July 1 rapidly approaching, the Bruins and DeBrusk still have not agreed on a new deal. Because of this, the chances of No. 74 hitting the market are only increasing each day that passes by.

Both the Bruins and DeBrusk have expressed interest in keeping their relationship going, but it is far from set in stone that they will. If the 2015 first-round pick hits the free-agent market, he will generate much interest, as he is a top-six forward with several years left in his prime.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are one specific club that stands out as a potential suitor for DeBrusk this summer.

The Penguins notably made a push to acquire DeBrusk before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline passed. While a deal did not come to fruition, the Penguins could try to sign the Edmonton native if he becomes a free agent in two weeks.

There is no question that the Penguins could use a player like DeBrusk in their top six. It is no secret that they need more scoring if they hope to end their two-year playoff drought in 2024-25. In addition, they dealt Jake Guentzel at the deadline, so they could use a boost on the wing.

It will be intriguing to see what happens with DeBrusk from here. The door for him to remain a Bruin is still open, but the clock is ticking. If he becomes a free agent, don’t be shocked if the Pens send him an offer.
