CENTENNIAL, Colo — Cale Makar is heading to Winnipeg with the Avalanche.
The Avs’ star defenseman suffered a lower-body injury in Tuesday’s 6-3 victory over the Seattle Kraken and only played one shift in the third period. Head coach Jared Bednar said after the game that Makar had tweaked something but had no further updates.
Following Wednesday’s practice, Bednar provided another update, saying that Makar is doing “ok” and is making the trip to Winnipeg. Colorado plays the Jets on Thursday before returning home.
“He’s ok, he’s making the trip. Wants to see if he’s feeling good enough to go tomorrow,” Bednar said.
Makar is currently riding a season-opening 13-game point streak alongside teammate Nathan MacKinnon. The duo is currently the NHL’s top two point producers, with 25 for MacKinnon and 23 for Makar.
If Makar can’t play, the Avs will dress Oliver Kylington or John Ludvig. Alexandar Georgiev will start against the Jets.
Bednar also said that Jonathan Drouin won’t make the trip and will stay back to skate with Valeri Nichushkin and skills coach Toby Petersen. Goalie Kaapo Kahkonen will also stay in Denver. Colorado hosts the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
