Central Division Powerhouse Snatch Goalie from Philadelphia Flyers

The Minnesota Wild have reportedly signed valuable goaltending depth with the addition of Cal Petersen, who has spent the last handful of years with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Minnesota Wild have reportedly secured additional valuable goaltending depth in free agency, signing Cal Petersen to a new contract.

Hearing #mnwild have signed goalie Cal Petersen to a one-year, one-way, $775,000 contract. Chance for the former NHL goalie to reset and be insurance for Gustavsson/Wallstedt. If he clears waivers, his 775K comes off the ceiling, which is now $10,186,668.

He'll likely spend most of his time in the AHL with the Iowa Wild, but could see playing time in the NHL in the event of an injury to Filip Gustavsson or Jesper Wallstedt.

Petersen was originally taken with the 129th overall selection by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, and later played in the NCAA for the University of Notre Dame.

He was even named captain despite being a goaltender and helped lead the Fighting Irish to the 2017 Frozen Four. Additionally, he was twice a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men's ice hockey.

Unable to come to terms on a contract with the Sabres, he was signed by the Los Angeles Kings and started his tenure with the AHL's Ontario Reign.

He would start seeing regular NHL action and, even at one point, was considered the heir apparent to Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick as the starter. However, he began to struggle and was eventually traded to the Philadelphia Flyers as part of a 3-team trade in June 2023.

He's spent the last 2 years in the Flyers organization, mostly playing for their AHL affiliate, Leigh Valley Phantoms.

He has an NHL record of 46-44-10 with a 2.96 GAA and .903 SV%.
