Chicago Blackhawks 2025 outlook clouded by coaching uncertainty

The Chicago Blackhawks had a disappointing season in 2024-25, punctuated by the coaching change early in the season. The Blackhawks’ tough start prompted team management to part ways with Luke Richardson, handing the helm over to Anders Sorensen.

Chicago Blackhawks interim coach Anders Sorensen took over amid a tough start to the season.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the team didn’t fare much better under Sorensen. The club finished in last place in the Central Division with a 25-46-11 mark good for 61 points.

The Hawks are on track for the second overall pick in June, with a fairly decent chance at the top overall pick. But amid those potentially bright spots, the biggest cloud hanging over the team is the uncertainty behind the bench.

At the moment, there’s no indication that Sorensen is the Blackhawks’ first choice to lead the team. As such, Chicago could be looking at potential coaching candidates out there before making up their minds.

It’s hard to speculate which names could be on the team’s radar. Established names like Mike Sullivan and Peter Laviolette are out there. Perhaps a lesser-known coach could make the jump. But whoever the Hawks choose, it will have to be someone who can handle a rebuilding team loaded with young talent.

Additionally, the number of veteran players on the team also requires that the Hawks’ coach next season understands the balance between suiting up young players with older ones. My instincts tell me the Blackhawks will be looking more toward someone with the vision to lead the rebuild, more than an established name that may not be fully committed to a rebuilding team.

The Chicago Blackhawks' next coach should focus on team’s long-term vision

The Chicago Blackhawks’ next coach shouldn’t be one to focus on getting the team to the playoffs. Yes, doing so would be a wonderful outcome for next season. But the Blackhawks’ next coach should be more inclined toward building a sustainable, long-term vision for the team as opposed to a short-term push to make the playoffs.

That vision includes getting younger players to continue developing alongside Connor Bedard. Here, we’re talking about players like Frank Nazar, Ryan Greene, Colton Dach, Alex Vlasic, and Artyom Levshunov who could become the team’s core for the next decade or so.

This trove of young talent needs a coach who understands how to commandeer developing players so that they can grow into bona fide NHL stars.

In my estimation, this approach would imply hiring a younger coach who communicates with players and speaks their language, as opposed to an older coach who may resonate better with veterans.

Fans shouldn’t expect a coaching decision to be made soon. The team will need to interview several candidates, including Sorensen, before reaching a conclusion. But one thing is certain: The Hawks’ coaching decision this summer will be the biggest one of the offseason.
