Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 12

Just Myrtle Beach won tonight

You’ll probably notice it soon if you haven’t already, but the big promotion is that Iowa Cubs broadcaster Alex Cohen is going to St. Louis tomorrow to call the Cubs doubleheader on Marquee Network, filling in for Boog Sciambi. It will be Cohen’s major league debut. If you’ve caught him calling a Spring Training game or an I-Cubs game on Marquee, you’re already familiar with Cohen’s style. I’m sure he’ll make a solid transition to the majors tomorrow.

In other moves, infielder Reviaj Garcia was promoted from South Bend to Iowa. This is likely a temporary move to fill in as Moises Ballesteros heads to the Futures Game.

The Cubs signed right-hander Jimmy Endersby and assigned him to Tennessee. Endersby pitched in the Astros organization until last year, reaching Triple-A Sugar Land.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were silenced by the Nashville Sounds (Brewers), 5-2.

Starter Kyle McGowin got the loss after he was charged with three runs, two earned, on four hits over 3.2 innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Caleb Kilian pitched one inning of relief in a rehab appearance. Kilian gave up two hits and a walk, leading to one unearned run. The walk was intentional. Kilian struck out one.

Julian Merryweather allowed one run on three hits over one inning in his rehab appearance. Merryweather struck out one and walked no one.

Center fielder Cole Roederer hit a solo home run in the second inning, his fifth on the year. Roederer was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Two batters later, catcher Bryce Windham hit another solo home run, his second. Windham went 2 for 3 with a double and the home run. Windham also walked once.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were battered by the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 5-4.

Starter Alex Troop pitched five innings and allowed one run on three hits. The only run Troop allowed was a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first. Troop walked one and struck out four.

Jimmy Endersby’s Cubs’ debut could have been better. Endersby was knocker around for three runs on two hits and a walk over 1.2 innings. He walked one and did not strike anyone out.

Joe Nahas threw a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth. Nahas allowed one run on two hits and a walk over two innings. Nahas also hit one batter in the ninth. He struck out one.

Center fielder Kevin Alcántara hit a two-run home run in the third inning, his seventh of the season. Alcántara was 2 for 4 with three total runs batted in.

DH Yohendrick Pinango was 3 for 4.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs lost to the Dayton Dragons (Reds), 6-3.

Starter Drew Gray pitched 4.1 innings and surrendered two rus on two hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Grant Kipp pitched his first game for South Bend since early April and he very much struggled with control. Kipp pitched 2+ innings and was charged with two runs on no hits but four walks. Kipp faced the first two batters of the eighth inning, walked both of them and they both came around to scored after Kipp was relieved by Yovanny Cabrera. Kipp struck out three.

First baseman Brian Kalmer hit a game-tying two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning. Kalmer was 2 for 4.

Second baseman Jefferson Rojas was 2 for 5 and scored once. He also stole a base.

Center fielder Brett Bateman was 2 for 5.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans defused the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox) 14-2. The win was the 2,980th of manager Buddy Bailey’s career, which ties him with Mike Kelley for third on the all-time minor league managers list.

Starter Nazier Mulé went 2.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits. He walked three, hit one batter and struck out two.

Nico Zeglin got the win in relief. Zeglin pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits. Zeglin struck out five and walked no one.

Left fielder Andy Garriola hit a solo home run in the first inning, his 16th this season. Garriola also hit a three-run double in the seventh inning and a sacrifice fly in the fourth, giving him five RBI on the game. Garriola was 2 for 3 with a walk.

In the eighth inning, first baseman Drew Bowser hit a solo home run, his third. Bowser also had a three-run double in the third inning for four total runs batted in. Bowser went 2 for 5 and scored twice.
