Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 14

Good pitching leads to three wins for the Cubs system today.

The Draft may have been tonight, but the games go on.

The Minors will also go on an All-Star Break starting tomorrow. The ACL Cubs will play, but I’m not going to do a Wrap just for them. So this is the final MLW until Friday.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were mute against the Nashville Sounds (Brewers), 3-2.

Dan Straily started and got the loss. Straily gave up two runs in three hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out four and walked no one.

Caleb Kilian faced just one batter in a rehab appearance. He threw one pitch and got a ground out to short to end the sixth inning.

Catcher Bryce Windham went 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored one run.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies burnt the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 9-0.

Antonio Santos started and cruised to an easy win, allowing just three hits over five innings. Santos struck out seven and walked one.

The Smokies blew this game out with a six-run fifth inning when they drew six walks and were hit by one pitch. They had a double and a single for good measure.

That means the Smokies scored nine runs on just six hits—and eight walks. Left fielder Yohendrick Pinango was 2 for 5. He had an RBI single in the fifth and later scored.

Right fielder Felix Stevens was 1 for 3 with two walks, one of which came with the bases loaded. He scored twice.

The South Bend Cubs slew the Dayton Dragons (Reds), 7-0 in a game that ended after 6 12 innings due to rain.

Ty Johnson pitched the first three innings, surrendering just two hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Tyler Santana got the win because Johnson didn’t go five innings. Santana pitched two innings and allowed one baserunner, a two-out double in the fifth. Santana struck out one.

Nick Hull retired the side in order in the sixth to complete the rain-shortened shutout. Hull struck out one.

First baseman Brian Kalmer connected for his sixth home run of the year with the bases empty in the sixth inning. Kalmer also doubled in a 2 for 4 game. He scored twice.

Right fielder Parker Chavers knocked out his fourth home run of the year in the top of the seventh. It was his fourth home run this year. Chavers went 1 for 4.

Center fielder Brett Bateman went 1 for 1 with two walks and a sac bunt. Bateman scored twice.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans made a big splash against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (White Sox), 6-4. The win moves Pelicans manager Buddy Bailey to sole possession of third place on the all-time minor league managers win list. It was win number 2,391 for Bailey.

Kenton Egbert put the Pelicans in a big hole when he got rocked for two two-run home runs in the top of the second inning. Egbert’s final line was four runs on three hits over two innings. Egbert walked one and struck out no one.

The Birds bullpen shut down the Cannon Ballers on three hits the rest of the way. Jeral Vizcaino pitched two innings and retired all six batters he faced, striking out four of them.

Yenrri Rojas allowed no runs on two hits over three innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Vince Reilly pitched the top of the eighth inning and got the win. Reilly allowed a leadoff double who then stole third base. But Reilly stranded him there, striking out the next three batters.

Shane Marshall tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning and got the save. He struck out one.

First baseman Carter Trice was the hero on offense, hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning and chipping in an RBI single in the eighth that broke the 4-4 tie. That RBI single was a lazy fly ball that got lost in the lights, however. Trice was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk and the three RBI. The home run was Trice’s fifth on the year.

Left fielder Andy Garriola went 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.

ACL Cubs
