Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 30

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs defiled the St. Paul Saints (Twins), 9-1.

Kyle McGowin didn’t allow a run over his five-inning start. McGowin gave up three hits and walked two while striking out six.

Because Iowa’s bats didn’t wake up until the bottom of the sixth inning, reliever Edwin Escobar got the win. Escobar pitched one inning—the top of the sixth—and allowed one hit and one walk, but no runs. He did not strike anyone out.

Despite pitching in the ninth with an eight-run lead, Hunter Bigge got the save because he entered the game in the eighth with a three-run lead and the tying run at the plate. Bigge allowed his first Triple-A hit (over 9.2 innings) in the ninth, but it was a lazy fly ball that got lost in the sun. Bigge struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings.

First baseman Matt Mervis was 3 for 5 with a double and three runs batted in. Mervis scored once.

Right fielder Owen Caissie was 3 for 5 with two runs scored.

Center fielder Cole Roederer went 2 for 4 with a walk and a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth. Roederer scored twice.

Left fielder Darius Hill was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

A double from Roederer.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies defenestrated the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 6-0.

Chris Kachmar, Aaron Perry, Carlo Reyes and Blake Whitney combined on a one-hitter. Kachmar pitched the first five innings and got the win. He allowed one hit, a double in the third inning. Kachmar struck out seven and walked just one.

Perry retired the side in order in the sixth, striking out one.

Reyes pitched the next two innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Finally, Whitney retired the side in order in the ninth. He struck out two.

All six runs came on home runs. Left fielder Yohendrick Pinango connected to lead off the second inning, his fourth on the year. Pinango was 2 for 3 with two walks and three runs scored.

DH Haydn McGeary hit two home runs today. The first came in the sixth inning with two on and the second one was in the seventh with two on. McGeary went 2 for 4 with a walk and the five RBI. He now has nine home runs on the season.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were bitten by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 2-1.

Ty Johnson started and was the hard-luck loser after allowing just two runs on five hits over four innings. Johnson struck out three and walked one.

Catcher Ethan Hearn singled home first baseman Jonathon Long in the seventh inning for the only Cubs run of the game. Hearn was 1 for 4 and Long was 2 for 4.

Center fielder Brett Bateman was 2 for 4.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans got tarred and feathered by the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros), 8-2.

Starter Will Frisch gave up a single to lead off the third inning and had a 3-0 count on the next batter when he exited the game with an apparent arm injury. It was just Frisch’s fourth appearance since returning from Tommy John surgery. Frisch got the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits over 2+ innings. Frisch walked two, hit one batter and struck out no one.

First baseman Carter Trice hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was his fifth of the year and fourth for the Pelicans. Trice went 2 for 3 with a walk.
