Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 28

   

Houston Astros v Chicago Cubs

Pete Crow-Armstrong was named International League Player of the Week. Crow-Armstrong hit .444/.500/.926 with three home runs, ten runs scored and 25 total bases.

Right-hander Nazier Mulé was promoted to Myrtle Beach from Arizona. Right-hander Dominic Hambley went the other way.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were blinded by the Louisville Bats (Reds), 3-2.

Jordan Wicks gave up a home run to the first batter he faced in a rehab assignment. After that, he silenced the Bats’ bats. Wicks’ final line was one run on one hit over 3.1 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Wicks threw 52 pitches and 31 were strikes. Wicks got the loss because Iowa couldn’t score while he pitched.

The Cubs have said they want Wicks to make one more rehab start before activating him.

Miles Mastrobuoni walked with the bases loaded in the eighth inning for Iowa’s first run. He was 0 for 2 with two walks.

First baseman Matt Mervis hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to get the I-Cubs to within a run. Mervis was 1 for 3. It was his tenth home run this year.

Right fielder Owen Caissie was 2 for 4.

Iowa had four hits in this game.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies couldn’t hide from the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 3-1.

Kyle McGowin started and was the tough-luck loser. McGowin allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked no one.

The only Smokies run came on a home run by third baseman Matt Shaw in the eighth inning. It was Shaw’s fifth home run and second in as many games. Shaw was 2 for 4.

The Smokies had eight hits in this game, but didn’t walk once and wnt 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were robbed by the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals), 10-5.

Nick Hull started and took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits over four innings. Two of those four hits were two-run home runs. Hull walked three and struck out three.

Right fielder Jordan Nwogu was 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the seventh inning. He also scored once.

DH Ed Howard was 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored twice.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans brought the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays) to heel, 7-4.

Nico Zeglin made his first start of the season and allowed two runs on two hits over two innings before the rains came. Both runs scored on a two-run home run by Angel Mateo, the third hitter of the game. Zeglin struck out three and walked no one, although he did hit one batter.

The win went to Yennri Rojas in his Pelicans debut. Rojas pitched the first three innings after the rain and allowed one run and no hits. He did walk three and struck out one.

Jeral Vizcaino pitched the ninth and got the save. He issued a one-out walk, but no other baserunners. Vizcaino did not strike anyone out.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, his second on the season. Hernandez went 1 for 2 with two walks. He score twice.

Right fielder Jacob Wetzel was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI single in the fifth. He scored two runs.
