Right-hander Michael Arias was promoted to Triple-A Iowa from Double-A Tennessee.

There’s some bad news about Cubs top pitching prospect Cade Horton tonight. But it’s the kind of news where you say “It could have been worse.”

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs echolocated the Louisville Bats (Reds), 4-3 in ten innings.

Cade Horton only pitched the first inning in this game, allowing two runs on two hits (a triple and a home run). He walked one and struck out two. When he came out to pitch the second inning, he called out the trainer during his warm-up throws. Horton left the game with what the Cubs are calling “back soreness.” That’s not good, but the bright side is that it’s not an elbow, forearm or a shoulder.

Edwin Escobar got pressed into service after Horton left and he pitched three innings, retiring all nine batters he faced. Escobar struck out three.

Ethan Roberts threw two scoreless innings after that. Roberts allowed one hit. He struck out two and walked no one.

Carl Edwards Jr. threw 1.1 innings without allowing a run and got the win. Edwards gave up one hit and one walk. He struck out two.

José Cuas pitched the bottom of the tenth and got the save. He struck out the first two batters he faced before walking a batter with two outs. Then he got a ground ball that third baseman BJ Murray made an error on, but the runner on second base was thrown out when he tried to score on the miscue.

Iowa scored four runs in three hits and two of them were by first baseman Matt Mervis. Mervis hit a two-run home run in the first inning, his 11th home run this year. Later on, he singled home automatic runner Alexander Canario in the top of the tenth inning with what proved to be the winning run.

Mervis’s home run.

And his clutch single in the tenth.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were put out by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 9-4.

Matthew Thompson pitched the first four innings and got the loss after he gave up a three-run home run in the fourth inning to Ruben Ibarra. Thompson’s final line was three runs on three hits. He walked three, hit one batter and struck out three.

Catcher Pablo Aliendo was hit on the hand with a pitch in the first inning. He stayed in the game and went on to hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning, his sixth on the season. Aliendo was 1 for 3.

Shortstop Matt Shaw was 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored once.

Center fielder Kevin Alcántara was 2 for 5 with a steal. He scored on Aliendo’s home run.

First baseman Moises Ballesteros singled home Shaw in the first inning and also scored on Aliendo’s home run in the eighth. Ballesteros was 2 for 4.

Left fielder Christian Franklin was 2 for 3 with a walk.

Aliendo’s home run.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs sentenced the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals) to life, 15-0.

Nick Dean’s second start for South Bend went about as well as the first. Dean got his second win after pitching five scoreless innings and allowing two hits. He walked one and struck out one.

First baseman Felix Stevens got the game off right with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was his tenth home run this year. Stevens went 3 for 4 with a walk. He had four total RBI.

Left fielder Jordan Nwogu hit a solo home run in the second inning. It was his second home run this year and first for South Bend. Nwogu was 1 for 5.

Later on in the second inning, center fielder Brett Bateman hit his first professional home run. It was a solo shot. Bateman went 1 for 4 with two walks. He scored twice and drove in two.

Shortstop Ed Howard went 4 for 5 with a double. He scored three times and had two RBI.

Catcher Ethan Hearn was 2 for 4 with a walk and three runs scored.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scolded the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), 3-1.

Starter Mason McGwire went 3.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits. He struck out five and walked four.

Kenten Egbert went the rest of the way, getting the win after he allowed no runs and just one hit over 5.1 innings. Egbert struck out three and walked one.

Center fielder Jacob Wetzel was 3 for 4 with a double. He scored one run and drove in one.

Third baseman Reginald Preciado went 2 for 4 with a double. He scored one run.
