Colorado Avalanche to Kick Off 2025-26 NHL Season in Tripleheader Showcase Against Kings

The Colorado Avalanche will take center stage on October 7 as they headline the NHL’s Opening Night tripleheader against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The highly anticipated season opener signals a fresh start for the Avalanche, who are looking to put last year’s rocky beginning behind them.

Joining the Avalanche-Kings matchup in the Opening Night lineup are two more marquee games: the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers will clash with the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Pittsburgh Penguins will face off against the New York Rangers.

A New Era Begins in Colorado

The Colorado Avalanche will open the 2025-26 season against the Los Angeles Kings on October 7 at the Crypto.com Arena.

This season opener is more than just another game on the calendar for Colorado—it could mark the long-awaited return of captain Gabriel Landeskog. The veteran forward, sidelined for two full seasons, is aiming to make his official return and lead the Avs into a bounce-back campaign.

Colorado struggled mightily in the early going last season, starting 0-4 before eventually finding rhythm. This time around, the Avalanche will be looking for a statement win right out of the gate, especially with a healthy roster and a solidified goaltending tandem.

The defensive core remains elite, anchored by Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar, whose two-way brilliance continues to elevate the team's playoff hopes.

Final 82-Game Season Before NHL Expansion

The 2025-26 campaign will be the final year in which Colorado—and all NHL teams—will compete in an 82-game regular season. Beginning in 2026-27, the NHL will officially transition to an 84-game schedule, following the recently ratified Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The expanded schedule aims to even out inconsistencies in divisional play. For example, the Avalanche faced some Central Division opponents three times last season, while playing others four times. The new format will allow for more balanced competition across divisions and conferences.

Avalanche Fans Set for a Season of High Expectations

With a strong core, improved depth, and renewed leadership, the Colorado Avalanche are once again poised to contend for a deep playoff run. Opening Night against the Kings isn’t just the first game—it’s a chance to set the tone for what could be a memorable final 82-game campaign.

Stay tuned as the puck drops on a new chapter for the Avs and for the NHL itself.
