Jayden Daniels has all the makings of a franchise quarterback. But the NFL's illustrious history is littered with examples of promising signal-callers who've foundered with the spotlight glaring when their supporting cast isn't up to the required standard.
That's a problem the Washington Commanders' exciting new regime is looking to avoid. Those in power ensured this is a strong environment for Daniels this offseason thanks to a flurry of improvements across the board. He's got a strong backup mentoring him in the form of free-agent signing Marcus Mariota. The former LSU star also boasts one of the league's most underrated wide receivers as his go-to weapon.
Terry McLaurin's gone over 1,000 receiving yards for four consecutive seasons despite not having a consistent presence under center. Daniels is here to change all that and the pass-catcher believes they can push each other to greatness based on comments via Pro Football Talk.
"[I]t seemed like he knew the entire offense when he got there. He’s in there calling the huddles during the walk-throughs. He’s in there calling the plays and he’s extremely confident. And it’s a testament to his preparation and the studying he did on his own. But also, I just think the kid loves ball and he has a good feel for the game. So, I think he really came in with the right mindset and energy and guys are already gravitating toward him. He’s just used to winning and used to what it looks like to be a really successful player. And as a leader and as his wide receiver, I just want to be the best player I can for him. So, I’m going to push him and I know he’s going to push me."

McLaurin's opinion of Daniels is shared by his teammates. The praise and adulation have been frequent over early off-season workouts thanks to his sterling transition into a professional environment. It'll take much more, but the Heisman Trophy winner is off to the best possible start after being selected No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Commanders hope this budding relationship between Daniels and McLaurin becomes one of the NFL's most dynamic tandems in the passing game. Every first-year player under center needs a strong security blanket. Not many have the benefit of someone so accomplished. The former LSU star must take advantage of this luxury en route to a profitable rookie campaign.
Even this won't come close to getting the Commanders out of obscurity and back into contention.
Washington's offensive line needs to hold up in the face of substantial pressure coming their way. The rushing attack must shoulder their fair share of responsibility. Other pass-catchers need to take advantage of improved distribution. Kliff Kingsbury must scheme things to Daniels' strengths rather than trying to fit him into an already-devised system.
The signs couldn't be more positive right now. Daniels and McLaurin developed a close bond quickly. They are both highly competitive individuals striving for greatness. It seems like a match made in football heaven.
Hopefully, the Commanders can benefit from this fledgling partnership for years to come.
