Cowboys Potential Target Stefon Diggs Gets Rehab Update

Stefon Diggs has long been a rumored target for the Dallas Cowboys offense and according to league sources, he is making significant progress on his return from a torn ACL.

FRISCO — The first wave of free agency has passed through and teams have settled on their initial offseason roster moves. For the Dallas Cowboys, that meant a series of minimal yet impactful signings for next year's team.

Dallas did their heavy lifting before the free agency period began, returning defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa on a four-year, $80 million deal. Their restructuring of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb's contracts also kicked open more salary cap space.

The Cowboys are expected to create an extension for Micah Parsons within the coming months … meaning more room … and then there will be spending to facilitate signings from the NFL Draft class.

But there are still clear needs for this team following the first wave of free agency and needs that do not need to wait until the calendar turns to April.

Wide receiver certainly comes to mind here with several productive veterans still available, including Stefon Diggs. Because of his brother Trevon Diggs, Stefon has long been a dream target for Cowboys Nation, hoping to see the talented players share a team.

Unrest with the Buffalo Bills spurned a trade of Diggs to the Houston Texans where he only played eight games last season before tearing his ACL. Now a free agent, that injury has cast some doubt on the 31-year-old's return.

Fortunately, it sounds like he is making some considerable progress. According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, Diggs is providing some relief for interested teams as he rehabilitates his injury.

"League sources have described Diggs as ahead of schedule, already running full speed and gaining increased comfort cutting and changing direction," he wrote.

This is a major positive for Diggs as he looks to get back on the field and comes on the heels of a visit with the New England Patriots. More so than the Cowboys, New England is desperate for a playmaker on the outside.

After missing out on the bigger names this cycle, Diggs' recovery could align perfectly for him to head to Foxborough on the inside track to compete for a major role in the offense. Nothing is official there just yet.

As for the Cowboys, if the interest in Diggs - brother of Dallas corner Trevon - ramps up, they may fade out with no interest in bidding for his services. Unfortunately, that would crush the dreams of the Diggs brothers pairing up or the receiver sharing the field with Lamb.

Regardless, options aplenty remain available for the Cowboys to add to their receiving depth, whether they want a trusted veteran pass catcher or a young up-and-comer in the draft.
