Cynthia Bailey Interview — The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 16 - Parade

The 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' veteran gives her thoughts on Moore's actions, teases Phaedra Parks' return and explains why she loves just being a 'friend.'

Cynthia Bailey is back where she belongs. After a few seasons off, Bailey has returned to The Real Housewives of Atlanta, this time as a “Friend” of the housewives, in a season that is a true return to form for the franchise. As Season 16 continues to unfold for viewers on Sunday nights, we caught up with Bailey, breaking down what sets this season apart from the rest, why she decided to return in this capacity and her thoughts on that Kenya Moore vs. Brit Eady drama everyone is talking about.

“It feels good to be back in Atlanta with the girls,” Bailey gushed to us, explaining that, as the “originator of the Friend contract,” she is happy to be back in a different capacity (fans may remember Bailey wrote a “friend contract” for NeNe Leakes back in the day). “I love that I'm back in a friend space. I love the fact that I have organic relationships with some of the OGs on the show, I’m forming relationships with the new girls on the show, and I think at end of day I'm a good friend."

“I have lived, you know, I’m one of the older ladies on the show,” she added. “So I think I can speak to many things. I've been through a lot. Mother has lived.” Throughout her tenure on The Real Housewives, we witnessed many chapters in Bailey’s life, from two marriages and two divorces to multiple career highs. With all that experience in the public eye, she finds herself in a mentorship role to the new ladies.

“On camera and off camera, the ladies call me for advice, especially the newbies, because, you know, they're new,” she explained. “They don't know what they're doing most of the time, because Lord knows I didn't know what I was doing when I first came on! I wish I had a Cynthia Bailey I could have called when I first came on Season 3.”

She also is genuinely excited about the buzz RHOA has gained with this new iteration, after spending a few seasons with a muddled reception from viewers. “People are talking about Atlanta again, and I was actually there when, you know, Atlanta was on top. I'm excited to come back in more of a supporting role as a friend to, you know, bring back the magic.”

The new season welcomes back Bailey, Porsha WilliamsDrew SidoraKenya Moore and Phaedra Parks (later on), while introducing long-time friend Shamea Morton as a full time housewife, and newbies Kelli FerrellAngela Oakley and Brit Eady. “I think Season 16 is definitely the reboot of the freshness that we needed,” she explained when complimenting the cast. “I think that's what has been missing for the past few seasons.”

Moore, however, did not last long on Season 16, as a feud between her and newbie Brit Eady reached unexpected heights when Moore revealed explicit photos of Eady at her Kenya Moore Hair Spa event. While terminology like “fired” has not been used by Bravo, they did announce that they decided to “cease” filming with Moore for the remainder of the season.

The lead up to the jaw-dropping moment had the fans split as well, as Eady said multiple times on camera that she had a pistol after getting into it with Moore. Bailey herself was not at the dinner where those comments were made, and watching the season back now, it has provided some context for her regarding the situation.

“I was not at Angela's dinner, but I did hear about it,” she explained. “But, I definitely 1,000%, did not agree or like Brit using the word 'pistol.' That was just not something that is or ever will be appropriate for a show like this.”

Still, she explains that “people make mistakes,” and that Eady was immediately remorseful and is “so much more” than that scene. “She was definitely wrong for bringing up a gun. So I get that.”

As for Moore, Bailey reveals that while she has not spoken to Moore, she is ‘always rooting for her” and that she is “definitely missed” on the show.” She explained, “It's almost like we had this great team, and then we got to the Super Bowl and lost one of our most valuable players.” She added, “It's just unfortunate that she couldn't be here, that her and Brit couldn't get to a place where they had a chance to really actually become friends.”

Still, there is so much more to the season than just Kenya’s dramatic exit and the fallout from it, she promises, including the return of Phaedra. “She comes in hot,” Bailey teased. “Phaedra comes in hot, definitely. Phaedra was away for like 5 or 6 years, so it's exciting to see her back.”

Bailey also has plenty of other exciting ventures outside of RHOA coming, including a new reality series from Hulu, “Got to Get Out” which she stars in alongside former RHOA star Kim Zolciak-Biermann, Omarosa and more. The series gave her an opportunity to clear the air with Kim, who she rooms with on the show.

“The crazy thing about that is, we were never really friendly on Housewives,” she explained. “We got to know each other, and I really like Kim. It was really cool that we were able to be put in a place, a situation where we could actually get to know each other. So that was cool.”

While she says “never say never” when asked if she would become a full time housewife again, for now, she insists the friend role suits her. “The friend role allows me that time and flexibility to really work around my schedule,” she explained, as she has an entire acting career she is balancing as well. “I pop in, you know, for me, which is really fun and so much fun to go get everyone else's tea and not have to, you know, spill your own tea.”

“I love this about Bravo that they'll let us go from housewife to friend, friend to housewife,” she added. “It keeps you still connected to the show in whatever way, and if you don't have a storyline or if you have a storyline you're just not interested in sharing, it's still a great way to still be on the show.” She quipped, “I mean, if it's good enough for Kathy Hilton, it's definitely good enough for me!”
