Chris Drury made clear that Jacob Trouba serves a valuable role as a leader for the Rangers while not fully diving into his underwhelming play.
There has been a lot of blame placed on Jacob Trouba since the New York Rangers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Final.
The Rangers captain had one goal, six assists and seven points in 16 playoff games.
His play has been scrutinized by many Ranger fans and even some media members despite holding the high honor of captain.
Trouba has an $8 million cap hit and The Athletic’s Peter Baugh brought up the idea of potentially trading Trouba after July 1 with two years remaining in his contract.
Rangers general manager Chris Drury came to the defense of Trouba and made clear he is a valuable member of the team.
“Jacob has been an excellent captain and leader for us,” Drury said. “Comes to play hard every single night… It takes everyone to win. It’s a team sport. We’re going to keep trying to figure it out.”
It’s easy to say that since Trouba hasn’t necessarily lived up to standards as of late he should get traded, but some players’ impact goes beyond just their individual performance.
Trouba is a tremendous leader who seems to be loved amongst all of his teammates, so parting ways with a player of that magnitude would most likely be detrimental to the locker room.
Being the captain of a team is a big responsibility and Trouba does a lot that is just not seen on the ice.
However, all players are held to a certain standard no matter if there is a C on your jersey or not and Trouba has to be accountable for his underwhelming play.
