Drew Barrymore believes her divorce had a “devastating” effect on her family.
The actress told “Drew Barrymore Show” viewers Friday (via People) that it “took a long time to recover” from her and ex Will Kopelman not raising their daughters with a “traditional family dynamic” post-split.
The Golden Globe winner, 50, explained that she previously “swore” to give that upbringing to her children since she “did not grow up that way.”
She recalled, “All the kids at school would go into the office to call their parents when they were sick and I could never get a hold of anybody.
“I was so jealous of those kids who would call and be like, ‘Mom, Dad, come pick me up,'” Barrymore continued while chatting with guest Moon Zappa. “I just would sit there and be like, ‘What’s that like?'”
As a child, the Emmy nominee craved “weird stuff like that,” such as “soup when you’re sick.”
Barrymore became a mom in 2012 when she welcomed daughter Olive, now 12, followed by daughter Frankie, now 10, two years later.
She and Kopelman, who tied the knot in June 2012, revealed in April 2016 that they were calling it quits.
“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family,” the former couple wrote in a statement at the time. “Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.”
The exes finalized their divorce in August of that same year.
Barrymore gushed in January 2023 that their co-parenting has “never been better” as they communicate “daily.”
By that time, Kopelman, 46, had moved on with Alexandra Michler, whom he married in August 2021.
The pair welcomed their now-1-year-old baby boy named John in June 2023.
As for Barrymore, she confessed in an October 2022 blog post that she hasn’t been in an “intimate relationship: since her split and doesn’t “need sex.”
While the “Santa Clarita Diet” alum told viewers the following year that she was dating again, Barrymore has yet to debut a new romance — but did reveal in October 2023 that she had “sort of” been seeing someone for three years.
