April 6, 2025 will be remembered as a day when the hockey world changed forever.
On a Sunday game between the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders, Alexander Ovechkin broke the NHL record with the 895th goal of his career. The goal surpassed Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 894, a record some said would never be broken. Both teams congratulated the Capitals legend on the historic achievement.
Meanwhile, many of the sports world’s most prominent figures took a moment to pay their respects to ‘The Great 8’ on reaching immortality.
The Vegas Golden Knights joined the festivities, with center Jack Eichel congratulating Ovechkin on his accomplishment.
Eichel was not the only one to acknowledge Ovechkin’s achievement. Golden Knights forward Pavel Dorofeyev also took a moment last week to discuss his fellow Russian’s chase of hockey history.
Among Ovechkin’s 895 goals, eight of them have come against the Golden Knights. Ovechkin also won his only Stanley Cup in Vegas, when the Capitals defeated the Golden Knights in the Final during the latter’s inaugural season in 2018.
With the record now in the rearview mirror, Ovechkin now looks to continue raising the bar.
