It’s not often an NFL veteran chooses a smaller role over the spotlight, but this offseason, one former Chief has made his priorities clear—earning the respect of a new locker room in the Mile High City.
After two years in Kansas City, where playing time was always uncertain and special teams became his primary domain, whispers about a possible starting return grew louder. Some wondered if comfort and championship pedigree would pull him back.
Instead, a decision was made that surprised many around the league. For Michael Burton, the lure wasn’t a starting spot in Kansas City, but a sense of belonging and purpose in Denver’s orange and blue.
"I’d rather ride the bench in Denver than start in Kansas City. Here, even the smallest role gets respect. In Kansas City, I was just a name — in Denver, I’m part of a family." The statement echoed through Broncos camp, immediately resonating with teammates and coaches alike.
During his 2021–2022 stint with the Chiefs, Burton played 33 regular season games, scored a rushing touchdown, and logged significant time on special teams—contributing to a Super Bowl LVII victory. Yet despite those memories, he often felt like an afterthought.
Denver offered a different chapter. In 34 games since 2023, Burton has earned two starts, notched touchdowns as both a runner and receiver, and earned First-Team All-Pro honors from PFF for his run-blocking dominance in 2023.
His presence helped reshape the Broncos’ offensive line, boosting their run game and pass protection—culminating in the league’s lowest sack rate in 2024. Coaches credit his leadership for improving both locker room culture and on-field execution.
Though his stat lines remain modest, Burton’s value in Denver is measured in more than yards or touches. Here, his work as a mentor and enforcer gets recognition—and the team’s soul is stronger for it.
For Michael Burton, the move isn’t about chasing headlines—it’s about finally feeling at home, no matter his place on the depth chart.
