False report: Milan Lucic did not sign professional tryout contract with new NHL team

Milan Lucic is not signing with the New Jersey Devils, despite a report claiming otherwise.

The New Jersey Devils had reportedly signed free agent forward Milan Lucic to a professional tryout contract according to Edmonton Oilers radio color commentator Bob Stauffer on 'Oilers Now'.

Lucic, who played three seasons with the Oilers from 2016-19, was reported to be signing a PTO deal with the Devils.

New Jersey Hockey Now reporter James Nichols quickly refuted the story, told from the Devils that the report was not accurate, saying they have not and cannot sign Lucic.

Canucks reporter Rick Dhaliwal confirmed via Lucic's agent Gerry Johannson that there is no deal for Lucic, who still needs to be reinstated by the NHL.

Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reported earlier in the offseason that Lucic was still ineligible to return to the league after being arrested by police on domestic violence charges.

The charges were later dropped after his wife chose not to testify, invoking marital privilege in court. At this time, it's unclear if Lucic, who is currently in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, has been reinstated to return.

Lucic, 36, had 2 points in 4 games for the Boston Bruins, returning to where he spent his first eight NHL seasons before taking a leave of absence after being charged by police.

A second round pick of Boston in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Lucic won a Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011, before playing with the Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and a second stint last season with the Bruins.
