The man who became known as “The Thiccer Kicker” during his college career will get his shot at making the NFL.
Former Missouri kicker Harrison Mevis is signing with the New York Jets, the team announced Wednesday. Mevis will get the chance to compete with rookie Caden Davis for the kicking job in training camp, as the team released veteran Anders Carlson in a related move.

Mevis became a viral favorite at Missouri, both because of his size and his talent. He is listed at 5-foot-11 and 243 pounds, making him quite stocky by kicking standards and leading to him being dubbed “The Thiccer Kicker.” He also showed the ability to convert field goals from the sort of distances that even some NFL kickers struggle with.
Mevis put himself back on the map last season by making 20-of-21 field goal attempts for the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions.
Jets coach Aaron Glenn has some experience in this department. The Detroit Lions managed to find a solution at kicker from the UFL last season while Glenn was the team’s defensive coordinator. The new Jets coach is hoping to catch the same lightning in a bottle with Mevis.
