The Philadelphia Flyers lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in overtime Sunday, dropping their record to 17-18-5.
Tyson Foerster and Scott Laughton both scored for the Flyers. Morgan Riley scored the game-winner for the Maple Leafs on a 2-on-1 rush in the back half of the overtime period.
Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen scored two points in Sunday’s contest. Heading into the game, Ristolainen had scored one goal and eight assists, accumulating nine total points.
A two-point night is not always worth noting, but Ristolainen had matched his total points from the month of December in just one game.
The strides he has made this season defensively have justified his contract; if he can get going on offense a bit, he could look like a steal going forward.
When a 3-2 overtime loss is considered a “good” performance, you know the bar is set pretty low. That is just where we are at with the Flyers goaltending at the current moment.
After not playing in over a month, Fedotov holding the Leafs to just 3 scores is a minor positive in light of a string of negatives in Philadelphia. With the Flyers’ next game coming against Toronto, I doubt Fedotov will get the call for a second straight game against the Maple Leafs, but he should be given another shot to stay in the rotation before and once Ersson returns.
For the second straight game, Tyson Foerster scores a quick, game-opening goal. Foerster also did it in the Flyers’ previous game against the Golden Knights. Noah Cates earned the primary assist on the goal, just like Foerster’s goal in Vegas.
The Tyson Foerster—Noah Cates—Bobby Brink line stays scorching and remains a bright spot for the Flyers, even when there may not be many bright spots to look at.
That makes Foerster five points in the last five games. The Flyers might have found some chemistry with that line.
The Flyers will have the day off Monday before they host the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, January 7th, back home at the Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. EST.
