Former Bruins Forward Traded to Rangers

This former Bruin is joining the Blueshirts.

Throughout this past season, former Boston Bruins forward Reilly Smith was one of the most-talked-about names in the rumor mill. While the Pittsburgh Penguins did not trade him during the season, they now have.

The Penguins have traded Smith to the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The Penguins will also retain 25% of Smith's salary, so he will have a $3.75 million cap hit for the Rangers.

The Rangers were looking for another middle-six winger, and they now have gotten just that in Smith. He has the potential to be an excellent fit on their second line and will undoubtedly get reps on their power play.

Although Smith had a down year in 2023-24, he was still impactful, posting 13 goals and 40 points in 76 games with the Penguins. Yet, considering that he had 26 goals and 56 points in 78 games with the Vegas Golden Knights the season before, he is capable of doing more. Thus, he has the potential to be a strong addition to the Rangers' lineup.

Smith just couldn't find his fit with the Penguins, and he has now been moved to New York because of it. It will be intriguing to see what kind of season he puts up for them from here.
