Former Golden Knights head coach continues his fall from the NHL

Remember the head coach who led the Vegas Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season? Well, he's heading off to Russia now.

Do you guys remember Gerard Gallant? He was the head coach that led the Vegas Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season. He's earned the distinctive honor of being part of Golden Knights trivia, alongside Calvin Pickard.

Well, he's practicing his Russian and is developing a taste for Borscht soup. The former Golden Knights head coach is heading to the KHL, according to Pierre LeBrun. An announcement regarding his next team is expected next week.

He had a solid tenure with the Golden Knights, posting a record of 118-75-20 in three seasons. Gallant also had a playoff record of 16-11 during his time in Las Vegas.

His most recent tenure was with the New York Rangers, where he coached for two seasons. Here, he had a record of 99-46-19 and led the Rangers to two playoff appearances.

All this sounds nice and all. But a drop-off from the NHL seems like a fall from grace for the tenured head coach. What could be the explanation for all this?

Why Gerard Gallant went from a Stanley Cup Final with the Vegas Golden Knights to the KHL

Spengler Cup Davos 2024

If there was thing that stood out with Gallant, it was his grating personality. He was hardened as nails and got incredibly short with players. It rubbed his own guys the wrong way and was the catalyst for him getting canned in 2019-20.

But being as smooth as the Mojave Desert ground wasn't the only problem. He was also stubborn. Gallant never put in the effort to change his line-ups when teams adjusted. That was proven in the Stanley Cup Final against the Washington Capitals and in 2019 against the San Jose Sharks.

This was previously mentioned as a sticking point and it cost him the Rangers job, too. Not being able to adjust when other teams like the Devils and the Hurricanes make necessary tweaks will hurt any head coach.

It's sad to see the former Golden Knights head coach relegated to a league in another country. However, work is still work. A paycheck is still a paycheck. At least you're getting something rather than nothing.

Plus, it could be worse. You could always be Evander Kane.
