Former Sabres Prospect Returns To Sweden

One aspect of the Buffalo Sabres having a deep roster of young prospects is that players who may have been in the mix for an NHL opportunity with other clubs may get overlooked. Such may be the case with winger Linus Weissbach, who played the last three seasons for the AHL Rochester Americans and sign a two-year contract with Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League over the weekend.

The 26-year-old native of Gothenburg, SWE was a seventh-round pick (192nd overall) of the Sabres in 2017 after playing two seasons in the Frolunda junior system and one year in the USHL. The 5’9”, 177 lb. forward played four years in the NCAA at Wisconsin, and after posting a 41-point season as a senior with the Badgers signed a two-year entry-level deal with Buffalo.

In three seasons with the Amerks, Weissbach had 117 points (52 goals, 65 assists) in 191 games, with his best season coming in 2023, when he scored 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists) and 63 penalty minutes in 69 games and 10 points in Rochester’s run to the Calder Cup Eastern Conference Final, but in spite of decent production, the Sabres never called him up.

After his ELC, Weissbach was signed to a one-year, two-way deal last summer and became an unrestricted free agent earlier this month. With young wingers like Viktor Neuchev and Aleksandr Kisakov looking for more playing time, the Sabres interest may have been limited. The winger now returns to his hometown club on a multi-year deal and will play with former Amerk Filip Cederqvist, who was traded to Montreal in January and signed with the SHL club after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Canadiens.
