It is official, the Dallas Stars and assistant, Steve Spott, have parted ways. It was announced that he was hired by the Boston Bruins to join Marco Sturm's coaching staff.
Spott completed his third season for the Dallas Stars after coming over with Pete DeBoer from the Vegas Golden Knights. After going to the Western Conference Final three years in a row and failing to get over that hump, the Stars fired DeBoer at the conclusion of the season. Due to the timing and how far the Stars went into the playoffs, all the head coaching positions were filled for DeBoer, leaving Spott to branch out by himself for the first time in years.
The seasoned NHL assistant with over a decade of experience brings a strong background in special teams and player development. Most notably, he worked closely with head coach Pete DeBoer ten years, accompanying him through stints in San Jose, Vegas, and Dallas. However, they started their coaching duo in 1997 when they coached the OHL's Plymouth Whalers.
Spott is expected to play a major role in enhancing the Bruins’ power-play unit, which under-performed at times during the 2024–25 season. While Dallas’s power play ranked 12th under his guidance, some criticism followed their playoff inefficiency, something Spott will aim to correct in Boston. His arrival complements the hiring of Sturm as head coach and adds veteran experience to a staff that also includes Joe Sacco and Chris Kelly.
