Innocent Masuku, a tenor with a voice that has captured the hearts of audiences around the world, has big plans to cement his name in the music scene.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Innocent shared his musical journey since his appearance on Britain's Got Talent.
“Being on Britain’s Got Talent was an unforgettable experience. It gave me the opportunity to share my passion for music on a massive platform and connect with so many incredible people. I’m grateful for the exposure and the chance to bring classical music to a wider audience. I was so honoured to represent SA and it was an incredible feeling to know the country was behind me,” he said.
“I was so grateful that I sang perfectly. I could not think and process the emotions at the time. Later, after watching it again, I felt grateful and it impacted my confidence positively.”
Ahead of his much-anticipated debut record and 2026 SA tour, Innocent will offer a preview of new songs, showcasing his unique blend of opera and contemporary influences on March 25 at Stellenbosch’s Waterford Estate during Wings For Change, an Italian Soirée in support of The Bateleurs: Volunteers Flying for the Environment.
“I can’t wait to share what we are working on in the studio with everyone soon. The foundation of the record embraces the epic grandeur of opera, but I also wanted the album to feel cinematic by means of storytelling, and cross genres into the other worlds of music and culture I love too.”
While he cannot disclose release dates yet, Innocent revealed he has several collaborations with SA stars his followers can anticipate.
He has performed with the English National Opera to perform the role of Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville. He plans to mark his return to Cape Town Opera in this role.
“Knowing I am one of the chosen vessels to bring the music to people who sometimes really need to hear it is what drives my passion. Looking at my journey, where I come from and where I am today, this always motivates me,”
“My music is definitely a source of comfort to many people. The gift I have is to encourage and reassure people that dreams can come true. I can also inspire those who are gifted to follow their dreams and passion.”
It hasn't been a seamless journey, said Innocent, and he wants other young stars inspired by him to keep believing in their talent and stay true to their craft.
“SA is part of me and I’m part of SA so the music is hugely influenced by South African heritage. I f have an incredible opportunity to share the SA spirit through music with the world. Singing is in the heart of our culture. There is joy, hope and resilience that comes with music in this country. We share that as a community and I have always carried that with me.”
“The journey is not an easy one, but it is always possible. Whenever it looks like it’s a dead end, that means you’re getting closer, so keep pushing. Don’t back down, go to those auditions and when they tell you ‘no’, go to another one. Don’t stop until you get four ‘yesses’.”
