Tyler Baltierra and Catelynn Lowell have been very outspoken about their unhappiness with Brandon and Teresa Davis— the parents of Cate and Ty’s bio daughter Carly— ever since Brandon and Teresa cut off contact with them last year. In a new sneak peek clip of Thursday’s episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, Catelynn and Tyler’s co-star Gary Shirley hints that the couple’s frequent discussions about Brandon and Teresa online and on the show may be the reason the couple cut them off.
While meeting up with the other ‘Teen Mom’ cast members in New York in January, Tyler talks to Gary— as well as Maci Bookout‘s son Bentley Edwards— about his strained relationship with Carly’s parents. After Tyler tells the guys that he and Cate have no idea why Brandon and Teresa chose to cut off communication with them, and that he’s not sure if it’s Carly or her parents wanting contact ceased, Gary suggests that it may be something Tyler and Cate have done— namely publicly criticizing Brandon and Teresa— that caused the relationship to be severed.
“They’re doing their own thing,” Tyler told Bentley and Gary after Bentley asked if Ty got to see Carly a lot. “They cut contact.”
“Is it the parents that are doing it, or is it Carly?” Gary asked.
“We don’t know, they won’t answer me,” Tyler replied. “Why would you not answer me? It’s such a weird thing. Adults communicate.”
Gary suggested that Brandon and Teresa may be trying to protect Carly by cutting off Cate and Ty so Carly doesn’t have to. He then asked Tyler to reflect on anything that he and Cate may have done to sour the relationship they had with Carly’s parents.

Gary— who has his own drama with his baby mama Amber Portwood, whom their daughter Leah is currently estranged from— stated that Leah gets upset when her mom talks about her online, suggesting that the same may be true for Brandon and Teresa when Ty and Cate criticize them publicly.
“There’s certain things that does bother Leah,” Gary said. “Like, she gets kind of embarrassed, if you think about some of the things that Amber says [about her]….I’m not saying that’s the same thing for you.
“The stuff you’ve talked about Brandon and Teresa [on the show and online], is that something that could be kind of rubbing them raw?” Gary asked. “Or could be causing [the rift] or hurting Carly?”

Tyler admitted that he didn’t know if his frequent online criticism of Carly’s parents has had a negative effect on the 15-year-old.
After the clip of Thursday’s episode was posted to the official ‘Teen Mom’ Facebook page, fans commented that Gary is probably right about Brandon and Teresa being mad about how Tyler and Catelynn have spoken about them publicly over the last few years.

“Gary is literally telling him what it is and Tyler’s like, *hair twirl* yeah, I don’t know…” one person wrote in the comment section.
“Yes Gary is spot on!” another person commented. “Carly is a teenager and she probably is embarrassed by what they are doing and saying on social media about her parents!”
“I love how Gary was subtly telling Ty he’s the problem without saying he’s the problem,” someone else wrote.
“Gary out here doing the Lord’s work,” another person commented. “Politely trying to show Ty big old signs that say ‘hellloooo, ya’ll have seen how Amber talking mess about Leah’s parents & talking about her all the time online & in the public bothers her, embarrasses her, stresses her & is a part of the breakdown in that relationship.'”

As The Ashley has previously reported, Catelynn and Tyler have spoken at length on social media lives, on the show and on their Cate & Ty Break It Down! podcast about their adoption situation, criticizing Brandon and Teresa for “taking advantage” of them being so young when they placed Carly for adoption with them. During a recent episode of their podcast, Catelynn and Tyler slammed Brandon and Teresa for being willing to change their initial adoption terms in order to ensure they could adopt Carly.
“I think the whole goal was to get a baby,” Tyler said, adding, “We were kids, listening to the adults around us.”
“There were four people involved in this [adoption] agreement, and two of them were children and two of them were adults,” Tyler added, stating that he feels Brandon and Teresa should have been honest with them and disclosed that they initially wanted a closed adoption, not an open adoption like he and Catelynn wanted.
“The fact that you shifted your desires to get the baby is selfish to me,” Tyler added. “Because I feel like that automatically shows that you weren’t planning on doing what we agreed upon.”
