The Green Bay Packers, thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, remain the only team in NFL history with three consecutive league titles. The first time they did so was nearly 100 years ago when Curly Lambeau’s Packers won three straight from 1929-1931.
The most recent, and the last, time they did it was when Vince Lombardi led the Packers to victory in the 1965 NFL Championship Game, and then to wins in Super Bowl I and Super II.
All of the players on these Lombardi Era rosters are well-loved by fans. Unfortunately, as time goes on, there are fewer and fewer of them to pass on stories from one of the most respected and beloved eras of Packers football.
And, unfortunately, today, the world lost another one.
Legendary Green Bay Packers Safety Tom Brown Has Passed Away
On Monday, the Packers announced that Tom Brown, one of the starting safeties on Lombardi’s five title teams, had passed away at the age of 84. No cause of death was announced.
Brown, who also played a year of Major League Baseball for the Washington Senators, was drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 1962 NFL Draft. In 1963, he played baseball for the Senators, where he hit .147 with a single home run. When he decided to pursue a career in baseball, he was not sure he wanted to play professional football. He promised Coach Lombardi that he would make a decision by July 1, 1963.
Lombardi responded, “We’ll send you a plane ticket and we’ll see you at training camp.”
Brown remains just one of two people ever who have hit a home run in Major League Baseball and have won a Super Bowl. Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders is the other.
After Lombardi left the Packers to be the head coach of the Washington Redskins, he brought Brown with him, sending a fifth round pick back to Green Bay.
However, Brown’s NFL career last just one more game following his trade away from the Packers. He injured his shoulder in the 1969 season opener and need surgery. Washington released him in August of 1970, a week before Lombardi passed away from cancer.
Brown ran a little league in Salisbury, Maryland from 1989-2015 called Tom Brown’s Little League. Children ages 5-12 could join the league to play football, baseball, or basketball.
