Igor Shesterkin signing a contract extension from the Rangers during this season is reportedly not out of the question.

There is still hope that the New York Rangers can get a deal done with Igor Shesterkin before season’s end.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman made clear that Shesterkin is more than willing to sign a contract as soon as possible if he gets an offer that properly matches his value.

“The word is if the Rangers get to a number that he likes, they can still get it done in season,” Friedman said. “I have heard many times that Shesterkin has positioned himself as the Rangers best player, most important player. I don’t think anybody would disagree with that.”

The Rangers reportedly made a groundbreaking offer to Shesterkin that would have paid him $11 million per season, but he ultimately rejected it according to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes.

Rangers management already proved with their actions that they are willing to make Shesterkin the highest paid goalie in NHL history, and that remains a promise the organization intends to keep.

“The Rangers have clearly indicated that he will be the highest-paid goalie in the NHL,” Friedman said.

Now, we all have to wait and see who makes the first move.

New York submitted their offer and Shesterkin rejected it. There are two scenarios that could play out from here.

The first scenario being that the two sides hammer out a deal in the coming weeks and put an end to all of this drama and speculation.

If that doesn't workout, the Rangers could drag this thing out until the summer and Shesterkin will play the entire season without a contract extension in place, putting pressure on the 28-year-old goalie and the Rangers front office.

This is a situation that will continue to be the number one storyline for the Blueshirts until it finally gets resolved once and for all.
