With 16 days remaining until the 2025 Free Agency period begins, top NHL insiders have some big insight as to what fans can expect regarding their favorite players.
In recent news, Elliotte Friedman has provided some insight on "32 Thoughts" that may have Colorado Avalanche fans breathing a little easier regarding the team's top-6 situation.
Martin Necas and Charlie Coyle Rumors
With the Brock Nelson extension, the Avalanche are left with just $1.2 million in cap space for the remainder of Free Agency. Not much wiggle room with that unless they want to attempt to offload a contract like Miles Wood's (worth $2.5 million with four more years left) in favor of a smaller contract for a bottom-six winger.
Friedman even went as far as to say the chatter surrounding Charlie Coyle was more so coming from outside Colorado, with other teams saying the Avalanche should make a move. The way he sees it, Colorado's front office does not feel the same way.
Ryan Lindgren
Friedman also said on 32 Thoughts that he thinks Ryan Lindgren, who the Avalanche acquired at the trade deadline along with forward Jimmy Vesey, will likely hit the market on July 1st.
While he feels Colorado is confident in the group they currently have signed, he did note that he wouldn't be surprised if the front office does target a "defenseman with a bit of jam or edge to them."
He also made a point to mention that one guy the Avalanche do need to prioritize re-signing is 26-year-old Sam Malinski, calling him "a very solid, young defenseman."
The Noise Surrounding Jonathan Toews
Winnipeg. Colorado. Tampa Bay.
According to Friedman, those are the three teams involved in heavy talks on the 37-year-old center.
In his words, "you can never have too many centers." Despite reports that Colorado feels good about their team on paper, Toews would be a nice addition to the bottom-six.
Full Quotes from 32 Thoughts:
Elliotte Friedman: "You know, it's interesting about Colorado. I was talking to someone about them and there's all this noise around Necas now all of a sudden, and someone said to me, if you look at Colorado's situation, depending on what happens with Drouin, and that's - I'm not really sure what is going to happen there - they really only have one or two players to sign. They don't have a lot of cap room, but they've gotta sign Sam Malinski, who's a very solid, young defenseman. But other than that, they don't have a lot of business they necessarily have to do. So, you know, I know people are looking at their roster and saying 'they gotta clear space,' I don't know that Colorado feels that way. I think they kind of look at it like - you know, there are a lot of rumors about Charlie Coyle. It sounds to me like that's a lot of teams looking at Colorado's roster and saying, 'well, they have to do something.' I could see the Avalanche saying, 'nah, we're good like this. Can never have too many centers.' The one thing I've heard: they traded for Lindgren, who's probably gonna go to market. I've heard they wouldn't mind another defenseman with a bit of jam or edge to them, but I've heard they're not - just because other people may look at them and say, 'they're too tight to the cap, they gotta make a move,' I'm not convinced they think that."
Kyle Bukauskas: "No, well, especially how they started last year with all of the injuries, but now teams are gonna try to tell them, 'look, you can't go into this season with all those players.' Yeah, no, I'll take that over the alternative, thank you."
Elliotte Friedman: "I'm not sure - again, it's always one of those situations where I could be proven to be wrong, but I don't think Colorado's convinced they have to do anything. They like how this looks on paper."
