Is Any Country Safe From a Zombie Apocalypse? The Walking Dead Finally Answers

Whether you're a die-hard The Walking Dead fan or just obsessed with zombie survival scenarios, you've probably asked yourself one big question: which country would actually survive a zombie apocalypse? While opinions vary, one Walking Dead writer has revealed a smart pick for the nation most likely to outlast the undead.

Tillie Walden, the writer-artist behind the Clementine Walking Dead graphic novels, recently sat down for an interview with Popverse to discuss the release of Clementine: Book 3, which arrived on June 25, 2025.

The book marks the epic conclusion to the Eisner Award-nominated series and follows Clementine as she "suffers a loss unlike anything she's ever faced" while also gaining "a new mentor called the Gardener [who] offers her a new family and a new way of living." During the interview, Walden was asked about how she chooses settings for her books, and that led to a surprising reveal: Greenland may be the most survivor-friendly country in a zombie apocalypse.

Tillie Walden Reveals Why the Frozen Nation Could Be the Safest Place in a Zombie Outbreak

Walden explained her decision to set Clementine: Book 3 in Greenland and offered insight into how she selects each location. She recalled that Book One took place in Vermont and Book Two in Canada, then admitted, "Every location, for each book, was planned spur of the moment."

She said that she just kept working her way north, from Vermont to Canada and then to Greenland. However, as she researched the latter country further, she realized it was an unexpectedly perfect setting for a zombie survival story. Walden even stated that she genuinely believes Greenland would do quite well if the world were ever overrun by the undead.

"I actually think that Greenland would do very well in a zombie apocalypse," Walden said. "It's a place that has been inhabited by people who are survivors for a very long time." It is a valid point, and most Walking Dead fans would likely agree with this assessment. Still, there are more reasons why Greenland might be the ideal place to survive a zombie outbreak beyond the one Walden gave.

Why Greenland Would Crush It in a Zombie Apocalypse

With Brutal Winters, Isolation, and Natural Resources, Greenland Could Outlast the Undead

In addition to Greenland being inhabited by people who have survived for a very long time and adapted to its extreme environments over time. The country also has an extremely low population density and is geographically isolated, which means there are fewer zombies and a lower risk of an infected population spreading from other regions.

On top of that, Greenland’s freezing climate would pose a serious challenge for zombies. Harsh winters and below-zero temperatures could freeze them solid, greatly reducing the threat. There are also plenty of natural resources available, including fresh water, fish, and wild game, essentials for long-term survival in a post-apocalyptic world. So what do you think? Could Greenland really be one of the safest places on Earth during a Walking Dead-style zombie apocalypse?
