The San Francisco 49ers have some decisions to make this offseason. After turning over some of the coaching staff with the hopes of improving on a 2024 that saw the team sit at home for the playoffs, John Lynch & Co. will need to make some important roster decisions too.
Not the least of which is what to do with quarterback Brock Purdy.
Purdy will play in the final year of his rookie contract next season that will pay him $5.2 million. That's a huge raise from the $985,000 he made in 2023, but not near what he'll make on a new deal heading into 2026 and beyond.
The question is, will that new deal be in San Francisco or somewhere else?
49ers legend Jerry Rice appeared on 97.5 The Game and gave some advice to his former team about Purdy and his future.
"They need to get it done now," Rice said. "They don't need any distractions this year. If you feel like Brock Purdy is the quarterback for the 49ers, get it done. Don't let it linger into training camp and all that. But you gotta be sure. You gotta be positive.
"You can not make a mistake if you don't feel like this guy is completely what you need. … I believe he is the guy."
Purdy, himself also thinks he is the guy, and told the media last month that he'd like to have a deal done sooner than later.
"With the timing of getting something done, obviously I want to get it done, if it's an opportunity to get it done quick, that would be great," Purdy said. "… For me at the end of the day, I want to win. I want to win for this organization, and everybody here.
"I'm not the kind of guy that wants any drama associated with anything."
Unless the 49ers are prepared to head into another Trey Lance era, they should lock down Purdy asap.
