The New York Jets have a lot of have a lot of work to do before they kickoff their season in what could be the revenge game of the season. We already knew the Jets would host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday September 7 at 1p.m. ET thanks to the schedule release earlier this month. Now we know the steps the team will take to get ready for that game.
The NFL released the preseason schedule for the entire league and much like the regular season for the New York Jets, you won’t find much in terms of Nationally televised games.
The Jets will travel to the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, August 9 for an 8p.m kickoff in what will be Aaron Glenn’s first time as a head coach in the NFL.
The Jets then stay “on the road” facing the New York Giants on Saturday, August 16, at 7p.m. ET in the annual preseason matchup against their MetLife Stadium roommates. Finally, the Jets conclude the preseason at home on Friday, August 22 at 7:30p.m. against the Super Bowl Champions Philadelphia Eagles.
This will be an important preseason for the Jets as it will be the first time a lot of the Jets’ coaching staff will get some real in-game experience. Aaron Glenn has never been a head coach before, and he will get his first taste of action worrying about game management instead of just the defense. On the offensive side of the ball, new OC Tanner Engstrand will have his first opportunity to call plays for an offense. I imagine both guys will have to learn quickly on the job.
It will be also interesting to see what Glenn’s approach will be to the preseason. Robert Saleh was a proponent of keeping most of his starters in street clothes for the preseason, opting it was more important to make sure nobody got hurt instead of getting some live game action.
I think there is a fine line between leaving starters on the field too long in the preseason and treating them with baby gloves. I think we have seen too many good teams get off to slow starts and I believe it is because they aren’t getting any real game action until Week 1.
I imagine Aaron Glenn would likely feel more towards my way of thinking than Robert Saleh’s. This regime is doing everything they can to erase the previous one, and I imagine that would carry over to preseason philosophy as well.
