John Tavares Reveals Surprising Reason Why He Missed the Golden Goal vs. Team USA

It was an incredible sight when Connor McDavid ended up scoring the game winning goal in overtime for Team Canada against the United States in the Finals of the 4 Nations Face-Off, in what will be considered a classic for years to come.

But for Maple Leafs forward John Tavares, who was unfortunately snubbed from the roster he didn't get the see the game winner from McDavid, as the 34-year old had some more pressing matters to attend to: Sleep.

John Tavares is as rigid as they come when it comes to routine and no matter of country pride was going to interfere.

Tavares can celebrate well-rested, and it's a good thing because he is going to need all the rest he can if he intends on helping the Maple Leafs.

John Tavares' Restful Schedule Key For Maple Leafs Success

Perhaps we got a clue into how John Tavares can still be effective even into his mid-30's.

Keeping a routine ensuring he has enough sleep and conditioning his body as best he can only bring benefits to the Maple Leafs.

Known for being a very structured individual when it comes to diet, workouts, sleep schedule and training.

Tavares knows what's best for his body, and if it so happens to lead to him being an early sleeper; small price to pay given his contributions.

A genuine surprise this season after many speculated that he was past his prime and headed for a regressive campaign, Tavares has been a good as ever and while his offensive numbers are down; they are still very respectable.

In 48 games, Tavares has 21 goals and 24 assists while also winning over 57% of his faceoffs, and also became part of an exclusive club when he scored his 200th goal with the Maple Leafs after doing so with the New York Islanders.

A free agent at the end of the season, Tavares is more than likely going to re-sign with the Maple Leafs, but the question is going to be the price.

Toronto has to hope that it will be a hometown discount given they need to sign some other important pieces as well like Matthew Knies and potentially Mitch Marner.

Tavares' early bird schedule may have missed the golden goal that lifted Canada to hockey supremacy, but he can take solace in the fact he's done it five times before.
